Chapter 1:  What is DMT?

Normally, one would start a book like this with a rather long discussion on what DMT (dimethyltriptamine) is.  However, I will keep the description to a minimum  because I'd like this short book to chronicle what was for me the most profound life changing experience of my life.  There can be endless reasons why someone would be led to the spirit molecule, and I'd like to share my own encounters.  I spent one week experimenting with the substance, and traveled in the afterlife/hyperspace for seven nights. 

DMT is a psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family.  It is a chemical structural analog of serotonin and melatonin.  It is known that DMT is released in large quantities in birth and death and in smaller quantities when one is dreaming.  It is used in ceremonies by indigenous people through the consumption of ayahuasca, which is a drink.  DMT is present in both plants and animals around the world. 

I first became interested in DMT when I had a vision of the next life when I was in a rather serious car accident many years ago and caught a glimpse of the white light that is known to be seen in near death experiences.  After that experience, I researched and discovered that the brain's release of DMT mediates the near death experience and wondered if I could travel further if I took it exogenously, without purposefully endangering my life.  Through the writings of Terrence
