    Chapter 1

I watch the surrounding world with unease waiting for the next moment to pass. My routine was messed up last week when Jonas stopped coming to our meeting spot.

We agreed to meet one last time and stuff, but now I don’t know where to go. With Jonas not coming, it could mean Fate had finally won. Fate is cruel, well, it would be his own fault. Jonas and I were famous in our world for messing with Fate.

Well, I do know what I could do, but I have a hidden joy about messing with Fate. I must say this fiber that I’m in, the time traveler that I am seems to be the right choice. My ancestors who were all Fatest (pronounced FATE-ehst) guys traveling across time portals, would approve of my choice to follow in their premade path. Then again, I do enjoy teasing Fate in stretching her to the limits of her best patience. Jonas would always tell me I’m crazy, he plays things safe hoping to one day leave without being scared by Fate. However, I love the adrenaline rush of having to race to be somewhere a second before it would be too late. I just decided to follow their path I guess when I was young and my dad was still jumping across time.

There are fatal consequences, ha did you see what I did there? Anyways, if a fatest can’t be on time, no pun intended, then the time takes them away. Well, Fate takes them away. You see, you're not supposed to mess with Fate. You're supposed to go through your life and allow her to lead your path. I'm not good for following or being led. My dad taught me to tease with Fate. He also died leaving a deadly warning to all Fatests, me included.

I’m sure some of you are wondering about God. He’s there. Fate sure proves it. No one is sure how Fate came to be, whether a fallen angel, a special angel on assignment or a different being that God made. No one knows. We know God is real and He’s watching. Or something. He’s uninvolved at this point though. A judge waiting for His big day to act at last.

What was I saying? Ah, yes. My favorite memory of my dad was a week before he died. After we went to a movie theater in Berlin, it was an old black and white, you know the ones without sound. We had jumped into a purple mass of a portal, I froze. My Dad shoved me away and I got a jump off the electricity and adrenaline. I landed on my dad at the other side of the portal because I was supposed to be sleeping. My dad was next to me, when I peeked up at him, he winked. I fake sleep next to him when my mother came into check on us. She's always checking to see how I’m doing. She never approved of the Fatest life back then. She was not going to get it today.

I’ll be thinking about this, my mom and my dad, as I go to my next meeting. An old friend had a problem with Fate, and being I've met him before, he wants help paying his debt off.

    Chapter 2

My meeting went smoothly. I had to do some recon and wait to see if Fate would step in early or stay out of this. Fate and I don't get along. I never understood why. She’s always tried intervening at the worst moments. I mean come on, I could use a break every now and again, but apparently that’s not how she worked.

I check my watch in my chair, lean back, and fall through a portal. Yes, you can do this accidentally. No, it’s not pleasant. I land in a theater seat.

I'm sitting here in the theater chair when Jonas walks in and sits next to me.

Welcome back, he whispers. I smile. He hadn't asked me here in a long time. It’s an old spot, where Fate doesn’t like to travel to. It’s an old Fatest meeting place. One kept a long time secret, used in emergencies and when Fate was getting pissed off.

You're the one who wouldn't answer my calls, I whisper back.

Well, Fate has been nasty lately. She's trying to step in on my latest deal I've got in the works, he sighs.

I laugh softly. You said you played things safe, what changed? I ask.

You changed me, he nods at the movie. I was going to tell the guy no, but it seems he knew your dad. I couldn't deny an old friend of your father's.

I nod. My dad did have some crazy
