To my own king who showed me the respect and love I deserve to have from any man in my life.

    Chapter One

And she said, ‘yes,’ and he was thrilled because that meant they would live happily ever after, I finish reading the book and set it on the pink frilly bedside table.

Goodnight, Mama, my daughter, Essa says.

Goodnight, sweetheart, I tell her putting on my best smile. I knew a long night was ahead of me. I had to schedule to meet with the king. I wasn’t happy that I wasn’t allowed to see him for the day and it was upon his request. To say I was upset with my husband was an understatement.

I wanted to know what was going on and right blazing now. This is ridiculous!

I walk to the king’s door, my head held higher than I ever have before. With my regality and strength, I wave off his guards, they submit to my command and leave. I knock on the door. I enter without waiting for a response.

I open the door to find my husband, the king, disheveled and looking stressed. He sees me and looks on with an admission of guilt. He knows exactly how I feel about what he’s done.

Would you care so much as to explain? I ask saucily.

I’m sorry, darling, I truly am, he gives me a sad smile. The country is going to war as of tomorrow. You and Essa will be going underground for a few months. Hopefully, that will be all that needs to happen.

I glare at him. How could he not tell me? I’m his wife, his second in command- despite what his army commander believes.

I can’t believe you weren’t going to tell me, I mutter. I turn to leave.

Elise! he says his voice booming. He knows how to show his control to his kingdom and how to make people think he’s in control. I turn to face him not backing down. He stands before me. He closes the door behind me. I was going to tell you but thought this was easier since you’ll be close to enemy fire.

I stare at him disbelieving. He kisses me lightly. You really believe that I was going to leave the country and have you so far away? he shakes his head. I need your eyes for detail, and you need to know your daughter is safe. Your maid and her handmaiden in training are leaving for the south tomorrow at dawn. While undercover as you and Essa, all the while you and our daughter are accompanying me to the battlefield.

You are a bit of a mystery, I murmur. I wasn’t happy about this. My daughter would be close to the war.

Even after being married for five years you still are surprised when I find ways to bend the rules of the monarchy, he smirks.

You’re supposed to be a responsible king, I point out not laughing with him.

I am completely responsible, and that’s why I know you’ll both be safe under my protection, he promises.

I kiss my husband, the king. I agree that I couldn’t stand being sent away, I say giving him a small smile he wants.

I know, darling, and I won’t force you to be sent away either. I work better with you by my side, he reassures me.

I pack my bags tonight. I usher my handmaiden into the room she gives me Essa’s bags already packed.

Everything his majesty requested, ma’am, she bows.

You’ll make an excellent queen, I tell her.

She stands up straight in surprise. I take her by the hand and help her dress in one of my best gowns. I pile up her hair. She looks quite like me. It will work, she will play the acting part of the queen at a distance. Whilst, I will remain by my husband’s side during the war. I place my crown on her head and she shakes her head. It will be fine, I assure her. She doesn’t comment only takes what I say as a command. I didn’t show it often outside of the castle, but all of the maids and servants appreciated the respect I give them. Most had served the late king and didn’t at all like his wife. I’ve made a lasting impression. If only it was that simple though…

I grab our bags and get into the mobile home. What did you think this story was going to be in the eighteenth century? Did you think perhaps I would say horse and carriage? Maybe horse and buggy? No, my darlings, this is the twenty-second century… but we have problems all our own. The world isn’t what you’d expect it to be these days…

My husband returns in minutes with our daughter. We have cars surrounding our mobile home for protection. His second in command drives for us. We start heading out. I’m in the back in
