Chapter 1
Julius
The sound of my ringtone interrupts my damaging thoughts. For the past hour I have been thinking of nothing but Mr. Frank Reed, or as my mother reluctantly confessed to me, my father. How can this be? I answer the call.
Hello?
Julius, are you alright? I don’t want you to be upset over this.
Do you expect me to be calm over this? How can I not be upset after finding out my father is Frank Reed? How could you keep this from me?
I didn’t have a choice. It’s what he wanted, and I had to obey him?
You did have a choice. I am your son. I cannot believe you kept me in the dark the entire time. When I spent time in federal prison not once did you come see me knowing who my father was? He was part of the reason for my incarceration.
I never wanted you to turn out like him. You have to believe me on this. I had to keep his identity a secret. I did everything possible to protect you from that lifestyle. I made certain you were involved in activities. I kept you as far away from the streets as I could. It is the main reason why I avoided seeing you in prison. It was difficult for me to come to terms with you turning into a criminal and following in your father’s footsteps. During that time, I pleaded with your father to help me purchase our one family home. My dream was to live in a neighborhood free of crime. I knew if you grew up in a respectable neighborhood the chances of you becoming a felon would be slim. By some unfortunate circumstance though, you managed to find him with everything I did to keep you away,
she sniffles.
I’m nothing like him. You have to believe that, although I’ve done something terrible.
What do you mean?
I’ve killed someone.
No! No! No! Oh God Julius, what have you done?
I’ve killed Darius.
Why?
I had no choice. It was either him or me.
Frank will bury you. Do you understand me? Your father is a ruthless man. He seldom forgives and he never ever forgets. You took away his pride and joy. He lived and breathed for that boy.
What about me? You said I am his son too, right? How can he kill his own flesh and blood?
Your blood line is unalike Darius’s.
How is my blood any different than Darius’s blood? We have the same warm red plasma running through our veins.
Darius’s bloodline has a deeper foreign element. Darius has part of his mother’s blood also.
What’s so special about her bloodline?
Her bloodline is royalty. In the criminal world there are certain families that control everything, and their power and influence is beyond containment. His mother is Russian, as in the Russian mafia.
Are you certain about this?
I’m certain of it. You had a way-out Julius. Mr. Spalding and the basketball court could have taken you to places people can only dream about. I am afraid for you Julius. There is nowhere you can hide. He rarely went into specifics, but he talked about her once. She meant the world to him. With your father’s dealings into illegal business, he could not afford to ignore the pressure coming from surrounding gangs wanting a piece of the pie he was getting. He was losing profit and men every week from attacks on his enterprise.
So, I presume he hired the Russian mafia to protect him?
He had no choice. He just did not have enough manpower in the beginning to fight off the larger opposition. His back was against the wall. Your father became intimately involved with her after he sought out the Russian’s help. The Mafia was impressed by how your father did business and boosted his operation as well as becoming a partner. Anna was the contact person when your father reached out for help. Their conversations were primarily over the phone. She would inform your father of any changes in the business or when federal presence was near. Anna and your father developed a strong bond through their daily conversations. She was the linking source to the Mafia. Anna is the daughter of one of the bosses. Your father ran the business so well they cordially invited him to have dinner in Russia. That is when he physically met Anna for the first time. He was overtaken by her beauty, and she found your father to be very handsome as well. At some point during his trip, he and Anna made love to each other and she became pregnant. After giving birth to Darius, she informed your father she could not care for him. It was against her families wishes. Anna faced exile if she did not listen. So instead, she sent Darius to live with your father.
She gave her child away just like that?
If she didn’t, she would have lost everything.
Darius never knew his mother?
He did. Darius spoke to Anna every day and was able to see her when she flew in monthly. She has probably forced your father’s hand. I know he loves you, but the love he has for Darius is no comparison. What will you do?
I might have a way out of this.
The only way out is death Julius. I can’t bear the thought of it.
Mom stop crying. I am not dead yet. I’m very much alive.
For how long Julius? Two days? A week? A month? You will not survive. He will find you and put an end to your existence.
I’m working on something. If my source comes through my father will have no choice but to let me live. He will not be able to touch me, or his business will be out in the open. I’m meeting with my connection today.
Julius, when will I see you again?
You will see me soon. Trust me mom. Don’t worry.
I am a mother. Mother’s always worry about their children.
Mom, I do not feel safe with you living in that house anymore. I do not think it is a good idea considering he is looking for me. It’s probably the first place he’ll check.
I’m not afraid of Frank. He will never harm me.
What if he does?
Why would he harm me?
To get back at me for killing Darius.
In all the years I’ve known him he’s never yelled at me or put a hand on me. He treats me good Julius. Deep down inside we still love each other, although we live different lives.
I will feel much better if you live somewhere else until this is over.
This is my home Julius. I am not running from anyone. And besides, I am too old to be running. My sprinting days are over.
If something happens to you, I will lose it. I cannot allow it. Why don’t you stay with your co-worker for a while?
Enough Julius, I’m not leaving my home. That is final. I do not want to talk about this anymore.
I don’t know what kind of relationship you had with him in the past, but people change all the time, especially when their backs are against the wall.
Frank will always be Frank to me no matter what the circumstance.
If you’re not going to listen to me, then I need you to at least carry a weapon just in case something happens.
I’m against guns of any type, and you know this already Julius. I refuse to have a firearm inside of my home. Jesus is all I need. My lord and savior will protect me.
Mom, without a doubt they will come to the house looking for me. Can’t you take a little vacation until this is over with?
Just stop it Julius. I already told you. I’m not leaving my home.
Why are you so stubborn? It’s for your own safety.
I will be fine. Don’t you worry about me, ok?
Mom, I will check on you by the hour. Please answer when I call.
I will do my best.
Ok, bye.
Chapter 2
Jodie
As Annie continues explaining her story, I find myself feeling sorry for her. I should be angry with her for bailing out on us. How can a mother give up her children? As mad as I should be, surprisingly I am not. I am overtaken by the sadness in her story. She was young when she gave birth to us. Annie had no idea how to raise children, and she did not have the proper resources to do so. Alex used her,
