    1.      Introduction

No matter where you are in the world it seems that the biggest issue facing non-professional clubs and groups everywhere is money, or more precisely, LACK OF IT. Whether your club has 10 members or 100 members, there never seems to be enough money to do the things you want to do and consequently the focus of the club is often turned towards fundraising activities to help it survive rather than its primary focus of doing what its members enjoy doing (i.e. playing sport, or whatever it is your club does). It doesn’t matter if you are a football club, stamp collecting club or a scout troup, you will find you need to spend a lot of time raising money to fund your activities, whether it is a raffle, bake stall, bottle drive or a social event. Now I don’t say that these are completely unnecessary activities but from my own extensive experience in running clubs, I have found that invariably the burden of undertaking these fundraising activities falls on a core group of members. Over time this also often effects those members enthusiasm for the club and can be the cause of member burnout and loss as they decide that they don’t want to do all of the work any longer, subsequently putting more pressure on the core members who remain and increasing the likelyhood of them also burning out.

With increasingly hectic lives it is often hard to get a commitment from all members to participate in these sort of activities, therefore another common avenue of fund-raising nowadays seems to be seeking corporate sponsorship or charitable donations and grants. While these may be an easy way of getting valuable funds there is also an element of uncertainty about them from year to year, which makes it harder to plan for the season ahead if you are unsure of what funds you will have available.

My belief is that clubs need to look to new ways of creating a long term sustainable cash-flow that takes away the dependence on hard work by core members, or reliance on the generosity of corporate and charitable donors. It is for this reason that I have set up www.handsupforclubs.com, a website aimed at providing resources and information to help non-profit clubs worldwide survive and thrive in their chosen area.
