Chapter 1
Sitting in the darkest corner of the cold damp aptly named Dungeon
Jeremiah Zander flips through an old case file.
Oh, excuse me,
a voice said from behind him. Looking over his shoulder he saw a tall slender well put together woman holding a box labeled 1969-1970
on the end of it.
It's about time,
he croaked hatefully at her.
Excuse me, I think...
That is your first mistake,
he replied returning to his work.
I beg your pardon.
That's you second mistake, never beg.
I don't think...
That's obvious,
he said smiling though she couldn't see. Dropping the box to the floor behind him the young woman made a prompt exit. Not before however, calling back to him, Your welcome jerk.
Meanwhile, upstairs FBI Director Elijah Grayson unlocks his office door motioning for Levi Nixon the new Department Head to enter.
Take a seat,
Grayson said pointing to chairs in front of his large desk.
You do realize this is the first time in the past five years I haven't been in here to defend Zander,
Levi said with a chuckle.
That's partly why I am happy for your promotion.
Sir,
he said with a look of confusion.
To put a fine point on it, your burning out.
Burning out!
Don't get me wrong your one of my best agents but your wearing down fast.
Well a nice vacation would be..
Not before me you don't,
he said smiling.
Oh well, I guess having my own office will be like a vacation.
Don't look at this as a punishment, it's more a favor.
I know, and truth be told I'm tired of bailing Zander out of the messes he finds himself in.
From now on you can catch up on all that case work you have never finished.
Yes sir,
he said laughing.
Congratulations Levi, I mean that.
Thank you sir
The door was not fully closed when he stepped out from the shadow. A tall slender man with a scowl on his face. After their conversation Levi Nixon is congratulated for his promotion to Head Agent of the FBI then Nixon exits. The door barely closing shut behind him Jebadia King steps out from the shadows where he has been standing.
And, what of Zander?
the raspy voice of King inquires.
Damn it King, are you trying to give me a heart attack?
Grayson startled said angrily.
Hardly, good help is, shall we say, hard to find.
How long have you been there?
Long enough, whom may I ask authorized his promotion.
I did,
Grayson say's with contempt in his voice.
And whom then, authorized you?
I don't need authorization to promote one of, my, agents.
Fair enough, now, what — about — Zander.
What about him, he's a good agent.
He's reckless, dare I say, meddlesome.
To whom, you?
He's not one to...
Give in, bend, be led,
Grayson's nostrils flaring as he spoke.
Follow instruction, and stay out of...
Your way?
Trouble.
I can't just confine him to his desk.
Then find someone to...
Already have,
Grayson said smiling, as he slides a folder across his desk to King.
Butler?
King said scanning the documents, a confused look on his face.
She's the best of the best.
Really, but will she be able to handle Zander?
I guess we will find out.
No sooner had he closed his door and sit down his phone rang. It was his secretary a sweet older woman he had known for years.
Send her in Thelma,
he replied to his secretary before hanging the phone up. Shortly there was a wrap at the door.
Come in Butler,
he bellowed. She entered the room, he could see she was visibly perturbed. She began pacing in front of his desk.
Why don't you sit down, I assume you've met Mr. Zander.
Met, no sir, he didn't exactly give me the opportunity.
I told you his is...
Infuriating sir, he, he..
He's your new partner, so you are going to have to figure it out.
Yes sir,
she said frowning. There was a knock at the door, when she had finished.
Come in Zander,
Grayson said shaking his head sighing.
Grey, you'll never believe...
seeing Butler he paused.
How many times do I have to tell you, don't call me Grey.
Sir, yes sir,
he said still looking at Butler.
Mr. Jeremiah Zander meet Emma Butler.
Our new intern?
he asked confusedly.
Intern! Why of all the,
she started to rant.
No, no, no, your new partner Mr. Zander,
he said smiling.
My, what! Oh, no, I don't need...
Sorry Zander, Levi recommended her to me.
Why that no good old goat.
What's wrong Mr. Zander afraid I might show you up,
she said.
Alright, lets not add insult to injury,
Grayson said.
After a long pause in utter silence, Zander and Butler observing one another, Grayson finally spoke.
What was so important that you barged into my office?
he asked.
I knocked,
Zander replied.
You Barged
To be fair he did knock first, sir,
Butler said to both their shock.
This, see it's the same,
he said sliding two case files over to Grayson. One was obviously new but the other was
