Chapter 1
She had been spending the better part of her life trying to live out of the spotlight. But that was difficult with her father as the governor. Anya wanted to be like every other person she associated herself with. Her friends could go out without worrying about what they did that night being in the paper the next day. The fact that Anya was a teenager on the verge of becoming a young adult didn’t seem to help this publicity. It seemed that everything she did was negative no matter how harmless it was. The annual Fall Ball at her college would soon be approaching and the hype about who she would be going with was sending her into a whirl of fury. Anya had a boyfriend but she had kept that under wraps for the longest time, she didn’t want George drug into the spotlight with her, he had asked to take her to the ball at least a month before but no one but her parents knew that. They didn’t seem to want the public eye to know this either, they didn’t fondly approve of George, he was the tough rocker guy on the outside, but he was quite the gentleman when it came right down to it. But Anya’s parents’ hadn’t got past the whole rocker
thing. George played in a band and Anya had gone to many of their concerts, she was as head over heels for him as any teenager could be.
Anya’s parents were getting ready to go on a trip to South Africa, part of her father’s outreach ministries he was in the process of starting. They just happened to be leaving the same night that George was scheduled to play in the Battle of the Bands
, Anya’s parents had given her permission to attend the concert but under NO circumstances was George to come anywhere near their house while they were gone.
Now you have our cell numbers, but only use them for emergency reasons, we’ll be in Africa after all…
Anya’s mother droned on, she always got nervous before she left Anya home alone. "And under NO circumstances is that boy to be over here at anytime, and we’ll know, so don’t think you can fool us."
His name is George mom and if you’d try to get to know him you’d realize he’s nothing like you think he is.
Anya said annoyed, she had been through this before with her mother, and she knew what was coming, her mom’s speech was implanted in her head.
"I used to date boys just like him, any kind of musician is not good enough for my daughter, your father is the governor and you need to start acting more like his daughter. You should just be happy we’re letting you go to the concert." She finished packing and was headed out to load the car. Anya didn’t press the matter any further, at least she got to go to the concert, she thought.
Well, we’ll see you in about a week; you will be alright won’t you? And remember, you can go stay at your friends’ houses if they invite you, it’s better than being here by yourself. You can have Gigi over if you’d like, but no one else.
Her mother went on wishing her goodbye getting in the car. Anya’s father was rushing out of the door with a briefcase in his hand. He kissed her on the forehead and hopped in the car. Anya stood in the doorway and waved as her parents left. She was glad they were finally gone, they always drug out leaving, and Anya didn’t like it. She hurried back in the house and grabbed the phone. She was calling Gigi; after all she was taking her to the concert that night.
"Hey, Gigi, my parents are finally gone, looks like I have the house all to myself for a week." Anya said victoriously, she didn’t care what her parents said; George could come over for a little while, maybe just long enough to watch a movie, that wasn’t a sin.
My parents wouldn’t leave me alone for like an hour. So I’m guessing party at your place?
Gigi said laughing.
Of course not! Me, host a party while my parents aren’t home,
Anya said sarcastically, "that would just be completely irresponsible of me. Oh, and George will definitely not be coming anywhere near the house, because they’ll know he was here."
Yeah, I hear ya.
Gigi said. So, are you about ready for me to come pick you up?
She knew Anya would spend every last minute up to the concert to make herself look the best she could for George.
Well, I’m not ready yet, but you can come over if you want to.
Anya said, Besides, I need your opinion on some outfits.
Oh, well if that’s the case I’ll be right over there, I’d hate for you to not know what to wear, that could be a disaster.
Gigi added sarcastically.
Just get over here.
Anya said, and with that hung up the phone. Anya had been planning for this day for some time now, but she still wasn’t sure what to wear, and that’s where Gigi came in, she always helped her there.
Anya had time to do everything she had to do to get ready, but pick out an outfit by the time Gigi got there, when she walked in Anya was pacing back and forth, in sweats and a t-shirt waiting impatiently on her.
Finally,
Anya muttered letting Gigi in and rushing off to pick up her options, ok, should I go like all out and wear my new blue jean skirt and this top, or just go like everyone else and wear blue jeans and this other top. Keep in mind; it is George I’m dressing for.
Anya said in one breath almost throwing the clothes at Gigi.
Ok, just breath for a second, I’d probably go with the blue jean skirt, if in fact you’re dressing for George, I wouldn’t go with that top though, I’d go with that brown halter top you have.
Anya put on the skirt and her top and hurried back downstairs to show Gigi.
So, does this look ok?
She questioned, spinning on the spot to show Gigi.
It looks wonderful, George will love it.
She said smiling at her.
Oh crap!
Anya said looking at her watch, we have like 20 minutes to get there.
She finished and her and Gigi rushed out of the door, into the car, and took off down the street.
Are you sure this looks ok? My hair looks fine, everything’s good, right?
Anya kept saying the whole way there.
For the hundredth time, it looks great, if you ask me one more time I’m going to throw you out of the car.
Gigi said and they both laughed.
They finally got to the concert and parked as close as they could get, Anya nearly jumping out before the car was completely stopped. By the time Anya was walking across the street Gigi was just getting out of the car.
Do you think you could wait for me?
Gigi called to Anya who finally seemed to realize she was there too, Gigi hurried up to catch up with her.
Sorry, I just can’t wait.
Anya said distractedly.
As they were walking up the sidewalk to the building Anya spotted George and his band unloading their gear. She caught his eye and waved and smiled, he smiled back at her, but went back to unloading everything. They didn’t have much longer until the show started. Anya and Gigi made their way to the front of the stage, they had bought tickets as soon as they knew, and Anya wasn’t going to pass this opportunity up. The show started with the emcee announcing the order of the bands, the first band Hostage went up, George’s band wasn’t until last, so they had a while to wait.
Hey, I’m gonna go get something to drink, you want anything?
Gigi, called out over the music of the first band.
No, I’m fine.
Anya called back. Gigi hurried off through the crowd to the concessions, Anya stood there watching the first band when all the sudden she felt something cold running down her back, she turned around to see a guy standing there who had just spilt his drink down her back. Anya couldn’t believe it. She hadn’t spent all this time getting ready just to have a drink spilt down her back.
"Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, I must be like
