Annie was enjoying the party. It was the first time she had been out in weeks and although she couldn’t stay out long, she was enjoying kicking back and having a couple of drinks with her friend Mandy. Mandy was an odd sort, she was attending college in hopes of becoming a gym teacher or something like that. There were rumors that she was gay but Annie had been living across the hall from her in the dorms for the past semester and never seen any signs of it.

Most of the people at the party were Mandy’s friends. She was from a town near the college and so a lot of her high school friends attended the same school. Annie, on the other hand, was from the other end of the state and didn’t know anyone other than Mandy and a couple of her cousins. As she stood talking to a girl that lived in the dorm behind them, Mandy came along and asked if she was ready to go and she told her that she was. They both had tests the next day and had to get back to studying.

There was a large deck on the back of the house where the party was being held and as Mandy and Annie headed towards the door that led back through the house and out the front door, Annie was surprised to be stopped by a hand on her wrist. She looked down towards the guy sitting on the bench beside her, a bit startled. She couldn’t help but notice that he was very attractive with blonde hair and blue eyes set off the sort of tan you get from being outdoors a lot. Then he smiled up at her with a set of perfect white teeth and spoke.

Hey, I have the hiccups, but I’m sure if you kiss me they will go away, he told her. Annie smiled at him. She normally wouldn’t do such a thing but she was leaving. No one here knew her. She leaned down and kissed him softly on the lips. It was what some would consider a first date kiss; not too passionate but not exactly a kiss on the cheek either.

He let go of her arm, still smiling up at her. He was obviously a bit tipsy. Well, I’m sure they will go away now, he said. Annie laughed and continued on her way to the door where she found Mandy inside talking to another old school mate from high school.

Oh, there you are, she said as Annie entered. I thought I lost you somewhere, she told her. Obviously, Mandy had not seen the exchange with the charmer on the bench outside and Annie decided to keep it that way. They said their goodbyes on their way to the door and left. Annie never gave the guy on the bench another thought.

Well, not until almost three weeks later. As she sat in her dorm room working on a composition paper, her phone rang. Her roommate wasn’t there so she put down her things and went over to answer it. There was a male voice on the end of the line that said, Is this Annie?

Yes, this is Annie, she replied. Who is this?

This is Jim Norton, the voice replied. Annie said nothing. She had no
