The Uneventful Moments - T. Russell Morris
:
The Uneventful Moments
These moments that linger too long…
Are but years that will never end soon
Safe
There is a little boy inside me,
He is quiet and he is hiding,
Always watching in wonder...this world,
Laughing at the antics...
Of confused human frantics...
Amazed at the cruelty they unfurl,
No shame or restraint,
In their circuses of hate…
And the animals they allow themselves to become,
It would be so easy for him,
To go out and play amongst them,
But he saves his bravery for better days...
And so he waits ;
Out of the shadows,
He reaches his little hand,
And slowly takes one cautious step,
Then he pulls it away,
Retreats from the fray,
Back home to his favorite place,
Not out there...not this day,
Can you understand...what else can I say,
It is just not safe ;
This little boy inside me
Hungers for the magic,
Dreams in wonder of something to trust,
He waits for someone braver,
To bring the food of love he savors,
To then play on...it would be enough,
He watches them betray…
Each other like it is a game,
He cannot participate...
His heart is not tough enough,
So in his pocket he hides the key,
To a door they cannot see,
His wall between innocence…
And the beasts,
He reaches out his hand,
Holding the key to every part of me,
And he could toss it to you,
But he does not know what you will do,
How much you will take or the pain you will bring,
So he tightens his fist,
And closes the door once again,
Retreating to his favorite place,
I cannot trust you...
I wish there was something else to say...
But you know it is just not safe ;
Breaking down the door,
Tearing down the wall,
It is something he dreams of doing everyday,
But outside there is only war
They salt each others wounds,
And then smile and come back for more,
They murder and rape,
They lament and confess,
They sell themselves to strangers because it hurts less,
They bash each other raw,
They make lovers beg and crawl,
They trade abuse like it is nothing at all,
Is it really so bad to feel you do not belong,
So deep in the shadows,
He watches from the edge,
Reconsidering the question,
He is brave in his own way,
Refusing to give anymore of his soul away,
Loneliness is painful but it hurts less…
Than being ripped to shreds…
Or living with nightmares and regrets,
When those you love betray your access,
So not out there...not this day,
You must understand...
There is really nothing more to say...
It is just not safe :
The Hours
Have you ever listened to the night,
Alone with its secrets,
Alone with your weakness,
Under a stormy sky ;
Have you ever sat out in the rain,
Drowning your demons,
Waiting for a reason,
To get up and go inside ;
Have you ever whispered at shadows,
Confessing your desires,
Cursing the liars…
And looking behind you before you cry ;
Then you can understand me,
One of my kind ;
In my dreams I am running frantic,
From this phantom I use to be,
A dream of shiny lies and bright tomorrows,
Now I am the scarecrow,
Rats in the corn for company,
With a dusty heart so heavy…
And my needful arms so empty,
I stand over my kingdom,
Alone in the bitter breeze ;
It is In these hours of only lonely
...
That the past is vengeance...
A cursed memory,
With all my power...
I cannot seem to change it,
Addicted to the tears of the world...
The future misery...
Like it was always meant to be :
Have you ever stayed silent for days,
Not because you had to,
Not because they made you,
But because there was no one there,
Nothing to say anyway ;
Have you ever sat still all day,
Not because you could not move,
Not because they have broken you,
But because there was nowhere to go,
That you would be wanted anyway,
