    CHAPTER 1: BROKEN HEARTS

Bob would you come into the kitchen?

Bob Greene got up out of his lounge chair to find out what his wife needed.

His wife was standing near the stove, preparing dinner, holding her chest.

Bob I have a terrible pain in my chest.  My arm is paralyzed. Don’t move Joyce.  I think you’re having a heart attack.

Bob picked her up his arms yelling to their daughter Mary.

Mary opened the front door and the passenger side of the car.  We have to rush mom to the hospital.

Bob drove as fast as he could with Mary stroking her mother’s hair.  The staff in emergency wheeled her into the hospital.  The doctor gave her oxygen and aspirin until the heart monitor was set up for her.

Bob and Mary waited impatiently until the doctor came out of emergency to speak to them.

I’m sorry, but your wife didn’t make it.  The damage was too severe.  I’m surprised she made it to the hospital.

With tears streaming down his face, Bob ask the doctor if they could see her.

Yes.  Give the nurses a few more minutes and I’ll take you back.

Several minutes later the doctor led them back to the emergency room.  Bob sat on one side of the bed holding his wife’s hand while Mary did the same on the opposite side.  They both sobbed and cried deeply over their loss.

What are we going to do Mary?

We’re going on as mom would want us to do.  We’ve suffered a tragic loss, but mom would want us to go on living our lives.

After they had been in the room for an hour a nurse entered.

I’m sorry to bother you Mr. Green, but I need to know which funeral parlor you would like to use.

    I don’t know.  I can’t think straight right now.

I‘ll take care of everything dad.  We’ll use Johnson Funeral Parlor.  I’ll be in their office tomorrow to handle all the arrangements.

Thank you.  I’ll take care of it.  We need to use this room for other patients.

We’re leaving.  Let’s go dad.  We’re going home.

Without his wife the house seems vacant.  Bob was having an extremely difficult time coping with his wife’s death.

Mary what are we going to do?

Dad I’ll take over the cooking, the cleaning and paying the bills until I can find a cook and housekeeper.

That’s a lot to ask of you.

It won’t be for long.  I’ll find someone to help.

The funeral was well attended.  Bob and his wife had made many friends.  Some of Mary’s classmates attended.  After his wife was laid to rest they returned to the house.  Bob was extremely depressed.  Mary realized she had to do something to help her dad.

Dad if you died instead of mom what would you want mom to do?

I would want her to go on living.  I would want her to enjoy the remainder of her life.

Would you want her to remarry?

Yes if she found someone she loved who loved her.

What is the difference if you died and the fact that she died?

Bob was silence for several minutes before responding.

I get your point Mary.  There’s no difference.  I need to move on.

Dad I have several interviews with prospective housekeepers tomorrow.  You would just be in the way.  I want you to go back to work even if you sit and drink coffee

I’ll go, but it’s going to be very difficult.

Mary interviewed applicants for two weeks without finding someone she felt was suitable until she met Helen Blake.  She was fifty two years of age.  She was about five feet six inches tall weighing about twenty five pounds overweight.  Her grey hair was combed straight slightly below her ear level.  The dress she wore was well worn, but neat and clean.  The pleasant smile on her face softened her few wrinkles.

Helen, on the form, the line asking for your address you put street. I don’t understand your answer.

    I live on the streets.

    Are you homeless?

Yes I’ve been homeless for one year.

    "How did this happen?’

Many years ago I married a wonderful young man who was a hard worker and ambitious.  He became very successful and we enjoyed a wonderful life together until he tried drugs.  He changed overnight.  He went from one drug to another until he lost his job.  Our savings disappeared paying for his drugs.  Everything I tried didn’t work.  I tried hiding money, but he always found it.  My jewelry disappeared.  He sold it for drugs.  Our mortgage became delinquent.  I took a part time job trying to save the house, but he always stole my money.  He over dosed in the bathroom.  One of my neighbors helped me get him into the car.  He died on the way to the hospital.  The Catholic church helped pay for a simple burial.  I had lost the house.  I packed only necessaries and drove off to live in my car.  The car needed a lot of repairs.  I found a spot to park and slept in the car every night.  I made sure I took everything out during the daytime to prevent someone from stealing my clothes.  One evening when I returned to the car I noticed a tag from the police for the vehicle to be towed.  The next day the car was gone.  From then to now I either lived on the floor of a Church or on the streets

How did you get here today?

    I hitchhiked and walked.

    What’s your best quality?

    Loyalty.

If I hire you how do I know you won’t steal from me?

There’s nothing you own which is worth myself respect.

Helen I’ve got a good feeling about you.  I’m hiring you on probation for thirty days.

It means a lot to me.  I won’t let you down.

Do we need to go somewhere to get your things?

No, they are on the front porch in my suitcase.

Bring it in.  I’ll show you to your room.

After Helen got settled Mary gave her a list of foods they enjoyed and the normal hours of the household.  She stressed her father wasn’t to be bothered with questions or permission.

If I’m not available, do what you think is correct.  My dad is recovering from a deep depression over the loss of his wife.

The next evening Bob stop eating to inform Mary this meal was fantastic.

How did you cook such a great meal?

It was easy dad.  I hired a cook.  Let me introduce her to you.

Mary had Helen come out of the kitchen to meet her father.  Bob insisted Helen call him Bob instead of Mr. Greene.

Bob I just baked a chocolate cake.  Would you like a piece with ice cream on the side?

I’m full, but I’m not going to pass up chocolate cake.

Mary would you like some cake?

Yes I will try a piece.

Half way through eating the cake Bob exclaimed.

Mary this cake is so great it’s sinful.

    Yes it’s fabulous.

Don’t lose Helen.  She’s perfect for us.

Don’t worry dad she’s here for the long haul.

A month later, Mary called Helen into the dining room.

Helen I noticed your clothes are falling apart.  Here are two catalogs opened to the women’s clothing section.  I want you to pick out seven dresses, undergarments and make up.

Mary I can’t afford to buy new clothes.

You don’t understand.  You have completed your probation period.  This is your bonus from us.  We’re paying for everything.

    Helen broke out in tears.

I can’t believe how good you’ve been to me.  My luckiest day was coming to work for you Mary.

Two months later Bob mentioned to Mary he enjoyed going to the rifle range.

But, I want to spend more time with you.  Why don’t you go with me?  You can watch me shoot and then we’ll have lunch."

I would enjoy going with you dad.

The firing range was empty except for Bob and Mary.  Bob was an excellent shot.  After thirty minutes of shooting Bob turned towards Mary to ask her.

No one is here.  Would you like to try shooting?

    Yes.  I’ll try it.

The target is at two hundred yards.  Do you want me to move it in to one hundred?

No.  I can see it alright.

You have five shots.  Take your time and aim carefully.

Mary took the Browning semi-automatic 22, aimed and pulled the trigger five times."

Oh Mary you shot too fast.  You probably missed the whole target.  I’ll pull it in to see if you hit anything.

Examining the target Bob found five bulls eyes.

Mary I want you to repeat your shooting.  I’m sending out a new target.  When you ready to shoot go ahead and shoot.

Mary fired five rapid shots with the same results.

"This is something you should never mention to anyone.  At first you would
