OPENING PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for allowing me to accomplish one of my biggest dreams, which since I was a little kid, was to write and publish my own book. Thank you for guiding my mind, my hands, and my will throughout the entire process. I know none of this would be possible without your help. With this book, I ask that you allow it to inspire others to also go after some of their biggest dreams too, whatever that may be. The story I have to tell, the situations I’ve been through and the experiences I have gained, have all impacted my life in a humbling way. I ask that you allow my story to make a positive difference in the lives of those that decide to read and/or take the time out of their day to hear about it. I ask that this book be the beginning to a new outlet in my personal life. I pray that it will open up more doors and opportunities that will allow for me to continue writing and telling my story to those who could benefit greatly from it. In your precious, glory and holy name I pray. Amen.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Thank you to Jesus Christ, my precious Lord and Savior. Thank you to my parents, Agatha McLean & Melvin Austin for giving birth to me. Though we didn’t have the ideal family lifestyle growing up, I learned a lot from the both of you. You both taught me right from wrong. While it may not have been intentional, the experiences we went through have all shaped me into being the great man that I am today. And for that, I thank you!
Thank you to my beautiful fiancée, Amber Blanks, who continuously motivated me to write this novel and share my story. I’m extremely lucky to have a woman like you in my corner backing me up and encouraging me to reach my fullest potential.
Thank you to my two sisters, Mercedes & Melody for being there for me growing up. We shared many hard times and disappointments, but we made a way out of no way. I love you two dearly. Also, to my older siblings, Monique, Melvin and Marcus, thank you all for believing in me as well. I love each and every one of you!
Thank you to Helen and Mac Dashney. You two have been an amazing asset to my life. Helen, you really don’t understand how much I appreciate all you have done for me. You are truly a blessing!
Lastly, to all of my family members, friends, co-workers, and anyone else that I may have missed, THANK YOU in advance for your support!
PART ONE
I HAVE A STORY TO TELL
CHAPTER 1
AGAINST ALL ODDS
I t was my senior year and I had a few more months left to go before I graduated from one of the greatest universities in the world - Michigan State University. I was having an all-star senior year so far; I had my full-time job already locked and secured with Frito-Lay to be a District Sales Leader, my grades were great, and I was ready to finish achieving and accomplishing what many thought would be impossible for a young, African American male to do.
Before I graduated, there was one more personal goal that stood in my way. This was a goal I had set for myself a semester into my senior year – I wanted to be the
