Acknowledgements
I have been the recipient of countless inspirational stories from former high school students who were also teen mothers. I have been truly inspired by these remarkable young women. Their stories motivated me to write ABCs for Mommy!
Thanks to Kelly and Michele who shared very personal stories of their teen pregnancies so that other teen mothers may learn from their experiences and feel connected.
ABCs for Mommy! is dedicated to my twins, Mark and Melina and my husband, Matthew. I could not have accomplished this journey without the full support of my family.
Mark and Melina have always been remarkably patient and understanding about my career and the importance in helping others, while Matthew encourages me to continue writing—and reaching—new goals. His influence and tireless energy are what inspire me to continue thinking and sharing.
Introduction
The challenges facing teen mothers are not insurmountable. However, those challenges must not be ignored. ABCs for Mommy! is intended to empower young mothers to meet those challenges head-on. Young mothers will be encouraged to focus on a healthy pregnancy, to understand the power of nurturing, the value of being a successful student and a responsible citizen.
It sounds like a tall task, but it’s not if a young mother is committed to success and gives ABCs for Mommy! a chance to have an impact on her life and the life of her child.
Teen pregnancy can have serious consequences for both males and females including decreased chances of finishing school, a difficult financial future, and health risks for both the mother and child.
Although young and expectant mothers may feel isolated and alone, they need not despair. The Young Parenting Series will help young mothers; young fathers and the extended family of young
