    Introduction

I make no claims to being a prolific writer of poetry. There is nothing profound in the words, thoughts, or feelings expressed in these pages. Many of the poems are silly ramblings of disjoint, convoluted, and random thoughts that barely skim the surface where I envisioned they might go. Some may flow smoothly, others may collide in sophomoric discourse that gives you no greater insight into who I am or, for that matter, what I thought I might become. And while a few may have evolved into something more than that what they were in the first place, they are still relatively simple writings from a simple man with a simple mind. These are, after all, primitive renderings.

As a collection of works, Volume 1 of Primitive Renderings spans from 1973 to 1996. That’s a twenty three year time span that extends from my high school years to adult hood at the age of thirty nine. The earliest renderings, from Living to Die through Our Children, have hung around since high school and, while they have undergone some modification (grammar, typos, spelling, etc.) as evidenced by the copyright, they have remained essentially unchanged since their inception. The underlying theme of these earlier compositions, particularly Living to Die and Nothing Seems to Matter, is a stark depiction of solitude, futility, and darkness. I can’t tell you why I was somewhat more inspired to write when going through some darker episodes of my early years, it just turned out that way, but there is a big difference between the attitudes expressed in these aforementioned compositions and hopelessness and despair. In fact, I’d like to think that some of those feelings are brought into balance by the less anti-social compositions of The Ballad of Boris, Trip’n at the Rock Show, and, finally, Our Children. I guess the point is that in essence nothing is ever really as bad as it seems and we always have tomorrow.

There is a break for college from 1975 to 1979 followed by a contiguous second break of two years through 1980 where it just didn’t feel like I had time enough to write anything. College was tough and required all my energy just to survive and finding a job after
