Frequency Surge
Harry lived on the planet Tudor and had the job of releasing electromagnetic pulses to various parts of the universe to subtly increase their frequencies. It was a tedious job, taking eons as it had to be done in a slow, deliberate process. Too fast and some of the local inhabitants on different planets would literally explode, it was too much to handle, so there was a spec or process that was followed and Harry’s job was to monitor and increase when appropriate.
The purpose of which was helping various species on their evolutionary path, with the higher the frequency, the more they’ve evolved. Of course, some species can just ignore it, they’re not forced to it or anything, more of an opening to a bunch of new doors for those that might happen to be looking for them. Or, at least where they’re close enough, in the ballpark, and can more or less stumble upon them as soon as it seems appropriate.
To send the electromagnetic pulses, he had at his disposal a large control room filled with knobs, buttons, gauges, screens, and other equipment. This would cover thousands of places, measuring their output frequency and sending corresponding signals back. Sometimes they would try different things, experiments to see how this or that species evolved so while most of the changes were similar, they all had their own discrepancies, uniqueness, or ingredients, so the experiments were more of what could be called custom modifications for each.
For a while it was an exciting job as he was learning about all these new places and cultures but after enough time, he needed a break, wanted to see for himself some of the different environments. With that, Harry decided to take a break and go on a vacation for a few weeks. He thought he could leave the settings as is, take off and be back before anyone had even noticed. As an additional backup, he asked a friend of his, Inga, if she would check in every once in a while, and call him in case of an emergency.
Inga was thrilled about this, she had heard Harry talk about all the things he saw or did and it simply fascinated her. Harry appreciated the attention and generally answered anything she asked. She had even worked with him in the control room a few times so had a good feel for how the controls worked and what to do for changing them. Not that she was planning on doing so, but more along the lines of being able to look a little more closely at what’s going on, letting her own curiosity run wild for a bit.
When the departure time came, Harry asked Inga to visit the control room where he would go over a few things and give Inga the keys for while he was gone. Harry was already there and all ready to go, his bags were packed, had a beer, and he was strumming his guitar with a few tunes that were popular where he vacationing to. After he finished with a song, he heard a knock on the door, checked the clock and went to answer it, figuring it was Inga. Opening the door, he saw her and said, Welcome, come on in, thanks for helping out.
Inga replied as she walked in, No problem, you should probably have an assistant anyway, you can’t do this forever.
Yeah, you’re probably right.
Harry answered. I’ve actually been thinking about it more lately. Maybe when I get back we can discuss it but for now, you’re not to change anything, just simply call me in case of an emergency but everything is set to where there should be no problem. Don’t change anything, understood?
Inga responded with a who me look, Hey, it’s your show, you asked me to help out, no problem, won’t change a thing,
as she gazed around all the equipment and channels in amazement, even though she had been in the room more than a few times beforehand, she had never been left alone with it and was excited with anticipation.
Harry picked up a notebook and handed it to her, Here, these are my notes and comments about what’s going on with all these places. I know you’re curious so you can go through as you will, and I’d rather have you do that than start messing with all the controls to figure out what’s happening, looking at the history and so forth. This way, you can simply go through the notes and if you’d like to see the current status of any place, you can put in their ID here and you’ll have it. From there you can go to the next place and so on, whatever you’d like to check out.
Inga replied, This is great, maybe as I’m going through it I’ll make my own notes and we could try them out once you get back?
After thinking about it for a few seconds, Harry answered, Good idea, but remember, these changes take time, each single change requires hundreds or thousands of years to get rolled out. In the meantime you have to consider that each place and the beings there are also evolving on their own, with or without our assistance. So, ideally, we wouldn’t be doing anything, but this is reality and we go from there. But yeah, I don’t have any problem with what you’re talking about but I’m just trying to dampen the expectations of any dramatic change. It can be painful to watch but that’s just the way it is, all steps must be touched on.
So when do we do anything?
Inga asked.
When they’ve been stuck on a specific step for too long or if they start going backwards too far. But with me only being gone for a few weeks, none of that should be an issue.
Going to take another drink of his beer, Harry noticed it was about empty and went to get another one, You want one?
Harry asked.
Sure, why not, where are you going anyway?
Inga asked.
I’m going to the planet called Lagonna, taking a boat cruise on one of the longer rivers through some rainforests, ending up at a beach and ocean. Going to work on some new music, they have a musical instrument similar to a flute that I’m looking forward to playing.
Harry replied.
Are you meeting up with anyone while there?
Inga inquired.
No plans but who knows, it’s a small universe as they say.
With that, Harry took a long drink of his beer and turned to Inga, Hey, want to listen to a new song I wrote?
Sure, let er rip.
Inga replied.
Harry picked up his guitar, adjusted the capo, grabbed a pick and started playing. After five minutes he was done, What do you think?
he asked Inga and finishing his beer.
Inga thought for a second and answered, It’s pretty good, need to more instruments to harmonize with it though.
Yeah, well, it’s a start. Ok then, I think we’re all set, unless you have any other questions, I should be going to catch my flight, otherwise will see you in a few weeks.
Inga shook her head and with that Harry packed up the rest of his things and he started to make his way out. Feel free to help yourself to more drinks, food, whatever, and obviously lock up when leaving.
Don’t worry so much, everything will be fine, you’ll be back in no time.
Inga replied as Harry walked out the door.
Finally, Inga had the whole control room to herself, for at least a few weeks and who knows after that. Over the next few days, Inga had completely absorbed herself in the notebook, including starting a new one of her own, making notes from Harry’s notes, adding questions and occasionally suggestions of what to do next. A few more days went by when she started looking at the individual places, seeing what was happening and getting more familiar with all these other beings and environments. It was frustrating for her, seeing so many places going through the same problems over and over again.
After another week of this, it had become too much for her, she simply had to do something. But what?
she would tell herself before concluding, Maybe make just a little change to one place and see what happens. If the change was small enough, Harry probably wouldn’t know the difference anyway and plus, it could be excused with them just evolving on their own.
For the next day Inga debated what to do. She had already decided that yes, she was going to try something, Harry probably expected her to anyway, but still unsure what to do. Going back to the control room, she looked through the available systems again and picked one at random, a little planet that was labeled SR-3, otherwise known as Marth. She saw all the fighting and suffering happening and thought that one of the problems was simply communication. There were too many languages and not only that, even the ones speaking the same language seemed to have a horrible time actually communicating with each other. Most of the conversations would be lies or half-truths, always hiding a wave of information or feelings that were critical for real communication, taking hours, days, weeks, months, or years for the beings to break through and really start moving forward. It was like everyone was carrying around all these weights all over the place and they needed to be removed. Her conclusion was to send a pulse that was strong enough where they could start reading each others minds, giving the whole communication aspect a big, whopping, turbo charge. She set the pulse to the appropriate level, looked again at the planet, and hit the release button.
From that a beam of energy shot out from the control room in the direction of the planet, starting small but getting larger as it was projected out and eventually being large enough to cover the entire planet by the time the pulse reached it. Like a wave rolling through the universe, it hit Marth and was completely absorbed by it, with Marth and everything on it taking in all the new energy, getting an immediate boost of their frequencies and changes started to happen.
It wasn’t the same for everyone. Some people seemed to receive the pulse faster than
