Preface
In the beginning, there was Married to the Devil: The Genesis. A quick recap of the first book: I meet Lamar over the phone then meet him in person a few months later. I get pregnant, find out he has someone else pregnant at the same time (which he lied about) and then I have a miscarriage. Now he’s back home and we are trying to figure out how to make a long-distance relationship work.
I know by now you’re thinking, it was a little rough, but not extreme craziness. Those were my exact thoughts as I sat back and reflected from the time I first met Lamar until he went back home. I thought to myself, I can deal with this. Every relationship has bumps, and you will never have anything that lasts if you run at the first sight of trouble. The issues with Leah Pichferd were long gone, Karis didn’t inbox me anymore after I didn’t respond. Melanie didn’t text anymore after that last argument that Lamar had with her. All seemed right in the world. It never did dawn on me to discuss or even think about the lies about South Africa, or his house burning down. It just never crossed my mind again. I guess I filed it away as just a blip in the screen.
Well, grab your popcorn and box of tissues as we move into the next phase of my life with Lamar. Oh, and buckle up. This ride gets very bumpy along the way!
Chapter 1: All in the Family
We are in the first month of the new year. January 6, 2012 to be exact. Lamar went home yesterday. His sister’s birthday is on Sunday and she is having a big birthday dinner. I think it’s time for a change. My car, which is a Dodge Status Coupe, is way too small since I travel with a load of people all the time. It is almost always myself, my son Amari, my bestie/sister Reese and my niece Dooda, so this little two-door isn’t cutting it.
Reese, what are you doing?
Ummm. Nothing, why?
Get dressed. I want to go to the car dealership today and buy a car!
First of all, it’s like 9am, which is basically 6am and no dealerships are open at this time of morning. And do you mean that you want to go look at a car?
Uh, first of all, it’s 9:30am, and they are most definitely open because they are a business. And 9:30am is basically 9:30am heffa. And I don’t want to just go look, I want to purchase. So get dressed. I can’t do this alone-t.
OMG. Fine. Give me like 45 minutes and I will be ready.
Girl please, I’m giving you 20 minutes and I will be there.
We both shared a laugh and I hung up on her. I don’t have all day to be waiting for this chic. If I get there in 20 minutes, she will be ready in 45 minutes. If I get there in 45 minutes, she will be ready in an hour and a half.
So an hour later, we were off to the dealership to check out what kind of truck I can get. It only took about 20 minutes to determine what I wanted to get. It was just sitting there, all pretty and clean. Tan outside with a sunroof and 3rd row seating. This beautiful Expedition XL was calling my name. I filled out the paperwork, dropped almost five-grand and was told that I could pick the truck up on Monday, once they had inspected it, registered it and ran it through the car wash. Monday came and I went and got my new truck.
It’s Thursday, January 11, and I’m realizing that I haven’t spoken to Lamar that much in the past few days. I know he was really busy with work and his sister’s birthday, but this is unusual. As soon as I was about to pick up the phone to call him, my phone rang and it was Lamar.
Hey, I was just about to call you. What’s been up with you? You been M.I.A. for a minute.
Yeah young. I know. I been trying to get all my business affairs in order and get everything else in line.
For what? What are you getting things in line for?
Oh. Well uhh….
, his voice trailed off and he was stammering over his words.
Lamar, what the heck? Why you stuttering and such? What is it?
My chest is getting heavy and the air is a little thick. I feel nervous but I have no clue why. I don’t have any alarms going off, I’m just not sure what is coming.
Isaac. I know you heard what your mother told you to do, now get up and do what she said. And you can cut out all that talking back young. You know I don’t play none of that.
Lamar was yelling to someone in the background, and I had never heard the name Isaac before, or at least I don’t remember him mentioning it to me.
Sorry young, my nephew over hear talking back. But anyways, as I was saying, I was getting all my affairs in order so I could move to New York.
I still don’t understand what he is saying. It just seems foreign to me right now. I can’t even make the thoughts make sense.
Aye young, you listening to me? Did you hear anything I said?
he asked.
Oh, my mind trailed off somewhere around New York. You’re moving to New York why? When?
Well, how soon can you come pick me up? Or do you want me to fly, catch a bus or train up there?
Oh, you meant you were moving here with me.
Now it’s starting to make sense in my brain. I just couldn’t get from point A to point B a few minutes ago. I feel nervous still, but excited. I kind of didn’t want him to leave and go back home in the first place, so I’m ok with this move.
So what are you going to do about your business? How are you going to wrap up everything with your clients, or can you continue to the business and make new client in Rochester?
Well, I already made arrangements with Agent Buell to take over and run the business. It’s really hard to find executive security detail, and I have been doing it for a long time in DC, so that’s where my client base is. Trying to move that somewhere else most likely would take too long.
So you coming up here and what? You just gonna not have a job?
Well, not at first, but I will start looking now. I’m not new to hard work so I will do what I have to young.
Ok. So I can drive down on Friday, but we not staying. We turning right around to come back. Is that good?
Who is we?
That would be me and Reese.
Oh ok.
I hang up the phone and call my sister to chat about the new plans and the field trip that we are about to take, which she has no idea about.
Sooooo. Road trip this Friday?
Huh? What are you talking about? Where are we going?
Uh, well, to Baltimore. Lamar is moving here and he wants me to come get him.
What!!! He just left five days ago. So what about a job? Why is he moving though? That seems… too fast.
He said he got all his business affairs in order, and he would start looking for a job now. Of course I’m going to help him look for a job, because I am not taking care of a grown man. But I didn’t want him to leave in the first place.
So you’re ok with him moving here? No reservations?
I think I’m fine.
Ok. Well then, I will double check with my dad and make sure I’m good to go. I will let you know as soon as I know. Can Cortez go with us?
Absolutely. We not staying there. We only picking Lamar up and turning right around to come back home.
Ok. I’m gonna check with him too, to see if he wants to go.
We hung up. Now I’m thinking long and hard about if I want him to move in with me. That is a long-term commitment. Do I really want to make that kind of move? I wonder what Amari is going to say about it. He likes him, but to move in? That might be a stretch.
Later that evening, I brought the idea up to Amari. He didn’t jump for joy, but he didn’t flat out hate the idea. I think he was just more nervous because other men in the house is not something that we have ever done. I got the all clear from Reese as well that she can go and so can Cortez, so we are all set for leaving this Friday.
It’s now Friday the 13th. Today is the day that we go to pick up Lamar. Reese is already here at my house because she spent the night, so we didn’t have to make all these extra trips. I’m waking her up now so she can call Cortez and make sure he is up and ready. We need to get on the road by like 6am so we can be there by noon, and turn around to be back by 6pm. She calls Cortez and makes sure that he is up, and we get ready. We pick up Cortez and we get on the road. The drive wasn’t bad at all. In fact, it didn’t seem to take us long to get to our destination.
We meet Lamar at his sister Capri’s house.
Capri, this is my bestie Reese, and her boyfriend Cortez.
I introduced everyone.
Hey everyone. How’s everybody doing? Have a seat. So I just moved in here, so don’t be talking about me because I ain’t got no furniture,
his sister Capri laughed as she looked around the apartment.
No, it’s perfectly fine. This is nice though. I really like it
Reese said as she took a
