    ONE

Tosha Rimes pressed her cell phone’s end button and checked the time on her watch. Thirty minutes had elapsed since she spoke to Tony. Her mind reeled with words, making her even more confused. Today was the day she would tell Tony of her pregnancy. A pregnancy they both tried to avoid by using protection. It happened a month ago at the movie theater in Orlando, Florida, where Tosha and Tony lived until they graduated from Jackson High School.

Tony Williams would attend Harvard University in the fall, and she would go to California State University. Both worked hard for their grades ever since they were in middle school. Tony received a full scholarship for his paper on physics and the Ozone. His parents agreed to pay for his expenses until he graduated with a PHD in Physics.

Her parents agreed to pay the remaining of her bill to California State University after her scholarships paid half of the bill. She would stay on campus until she graduated with a master’s degree in psychology.

Her parents would not allow her to get an abortion. They were Catholic Christians who did not believe in killing babies. Tony’s parents were more liberals okay with aborting a child if it meant keeping one from meeting their goals in life.

Tony and she started dating in their Freshman year. He came to school on the first day appearing different from the other boys in school with his height reaching six feet four inches in the summer before the other boys reached their full puberty. A thin layer of hair formed on his face, making him appear older than his fifteen years.

She returned to school the same year, appearing older than the other girls. Her body had developed to give her curves and a chest that made men stop and stare. Tony asked to take her to the movies the following week, and they had dated until this day.

They did everything together at first. Football games with Tony playing quarterback, baseball, and track meets. Him the player and she the cheerleader. It was a romance made in Heaven.

Their Junior year they took their romance a step further. She got on the pill from Planned Parenthood. Tony used condoms to protect them both in case she forgot to take the pill. They had thought of everything. At least, it seemed until yesterday when her test showed she was pregnant. She decided last night to abort the baby, if Tony agreed to it.

Tony was smarter than her. Not everyone got into Harvard on a full scholarship. He deserved to finish college. The ability to become someone in the world meant everything to him. She could not make him choose her over his education.

Her fingers put the last of her lipstick on her lips. She placed the tube back into her small purse she carried over her shoulder. The long blonde curly hair flipped across her shoulder with her hand.

Her parents went through a hard patch in their lives. Her father slept in the spare bedroom for the past three months. Paul Rimes, her father, worked long hours into the night when he made partner at work. Her mother, Wendy, tried hard to keep the marriage alive. For three years she watched her mother cry herself to sleep at night.

It broke Tosha’s heart daily to see her mother’s red eyes. She knew depression would set in soon if they stopped working on their marriage. Tosha blamed herself for the failure in their marriage. Her parents got married because they got pregnant with her at sixteen. Her mother could not go to college, but her father finished. Sometimes, she felt her mother resented her for it. She thought her father resented having to settle at such a young age. He had dated only her mother.

She never wanted to follow in her parents' footsteps. Divorce would never happen in her marriage. No matter if the man wanted to leave the marriage, they would stay married and live in separate homes.

Tosha was not sure if Tony committed himself to her yet. They had ended their relationship the night they got accepted into college. Both needed to grow and live their lives in college. They both may regret it in the long run if they did not do it. Now, she had to tell him she was pregnant. How it may turn out she did not know, but she hoped they could still help each other through this mess they had made together.

The summer traffic made it difficult to drive fast. She pulled her white charger into a parking space in the front row of the park and turned off the ignition. Her mind wandered when she saw Tony sitting twenty feet away from her on a park bench. His blonde hair moving with the light wind across his eyes. The dark tan he got during the summer while lifeguarding at the pool made him sexier to her than normal.

She had to admit he was the love of her life. No one even resembled Tony’s handsome features. His blue eyes melted her heart every time he peered at her. He was the athletic superstar of his high school. Popular in every sport, and he broke several school records. Tony was the kid every parent wanted their daughters to date and marry.

Tosha did not understand why he picked her to date because she was nothing like the other girls in school. She loved learning and devoted her extra time to improve her knowledge. The two of them made an odd pair, but they did not care. They were in love and everyone knew it.

"How are you doing? Asked Tony, smiling.

I am fine, she told him, but I have dreadful news.

What is the news? Asked Tony.

She had an arduous time getting the words to come from her mouth. Tony had a dream of playing football in college while he worked for his degree. It meant the world to him. How could she tell him she was pregnant?

I don’t understand how it happened, but I am pregnant, she told him.

The blank stare he gave her told her nothing of his emotions. She raised her hand and waved it in front of him. But nothing happened. He just stared at her. What did she do now?

I am sorry, he told her. We were so careful.

I know, but it happened, she told him. I am not stopping you from going to college.

No, we are raising this child together. Said Tony, sternly.

How were they supposed to go to school and raise a child? Was Tony insane? Her mother went to school later in life and she received her degree, but Tosha remembered her mother returning home late in the night.

Tony’s blonde hair hung across his face, covering a speck of his eyes, for she could not see his dark blue
