    It was a Saturday afternoon in mid-August and the sun was at its peak, high in the midwestern sky, bombarding my neighborhood in simmering heat. It was a sweltering day. One for the records. And after just an hour of being outside, I was drenched with sweat.

    Having just fixed the chain on my bike, I decided on a swim. So, after a quick test ride, I scampered into the garage for a beach towel and sped off down the road. Pools were not much a thing in my neighborhood, but I knew of a pond just past a nearby park that other teens often frequented, so I headed that way.

    I peddled as fast as I could, thinking about the coolness of the water the closer I got. To my surprise, the park was relatively empty. Probably because of the heat, so I surmised the pond would be too. Through the brush and down a long, dirt path I rode, soon coming to the spot that led down to the pond.

    But as I got close, my peddling waned and speed slowed, because I heard noises ahead.
