Chapter Eight: Big Momma’s House

Five months ago…

Tired, sore and still a bit high, Devin stared out the window of the truck as it zipped down the highway. His eyes burned from the early morning sun, forcing an occasional scratch that always seemed to make it worse. Gary had insisted they get high before they left, seemingly so they wouldn’t have any dope in the car, but the high was already wearing off.

Devin had tried to sleep in the passenger seat, but was unsuccessful. Instead he decided to pass the time by striking up occasional conversation.

So how do you know Jane? Devin asked, yawning.

Gary chuckled. We met after Jane did some construction work or something up in Canada. Turns out we shared some, heh, common interests if you will.

Slowly glancing over at Devin, the man lets a smile creep out of the side of his mouth.

Ever since, we just kept in touch, Gary said.

The pair went silent once more. One of the many things Devin noticed during his time with Gary was that he was kurt, direct and to the point, and rarely elaborated. He seemed like a fairly private person, but whatever scant details he gave about his life, actions or interests, no matter how bizarre, were spoken as if they were completely normal. Sex? Drugs? Prostitution? All these things and more were standard fare for the rugged, dad-bodied Gary.

So where are we going? Devin asked.

Chicago. Gary answered bluntly.

You said you had a friend there?

Not really a friend, Gary began, more like an acquaintance. She runs a halfway house for boys, helps ‘em get on their feet, get a job. Ya know, that sort’ve thing.
