My heart felt like it was about to explode as I weaved my way through the town market.

Small clouds of dust kicked up under each hurried step, but it still wasn't enough to create a comfortable distance between me and the guards.

You won't outrun us, boy! One of them shouts.

I’ve been stealing food from the barracks for months without anyone so much as lifting an eyebrow. This time however, luck hadn’t been on my side.

Move! I shriek, still sprinting. Get outta the way!

Thankfully, due to my thin frame, I’m able to slip between the crowd of people with relative ease.

I glance back to see the guards nearly on me.

But I bring my focus to the here and now, back to the path in front of me, just in time to use some crates to hop over a merchant's cart.

To my unpleasant surprise however, it doesn’t slow the guards down by any stretch of the word and one of them throws their shield at me like a disc.

I can hear it whirling through the air before something rattles my brain.
