About this ebook
A person consists of three entities – the physical body, the brain and what is called the soul. This “soul” defines a person for what they are, what they will achieve and what they will become.
When a person lies in a coma, their body occupies space on a hospital bed. Doctors feel that their brains are active and can respond to outside stimuli so family is encouraged to talk to them. But what of their soul? We know there is an inner life source. Scientists have taken photographs of the moment of death when the “electricity” in the body departs, when the life essence leaves the body. So what happens to this life essence when a person lies in a coma? What does it do? Where does it go? What does it experience? Angela’s body lies in a hospital bed. She is in a coma.
This novella explores the possible journey of her soul.

A Mother's Love - Vera Alexander
A Mother’s Love
There is no love as pure, unconditional and strong as a mother’s love

Chapter 1: Vicki
Angela’s mother, Vicki, paused at the door and saw Chris sitting hunched over his still, pale wife, her daughter. The overpowering feeling of love forced her nearer. Her soul stretched out to her daughter. She willed the unconditional love that she felt for Angela to reach out and touch her, bring her back and tinge her pale cheek with a delicate damask rose colour. All these thoughts happened in the instant it took her to reach Chris’s side.
He was trying hard not to cry. He felt so powerless. She walked in quietly and stood behind him. She put her hand on his shoulder, silent tears welled up in her eyes when she saw her child lying so helpless and still. When Chris felt her hand on his shoulder, he started sobbing. He tried to make sense of what had happened. Slowly the pieces started to fall into place and he haltingly began his story.
Chapter 2: Chris
We were driving on the freeway to keep our lunch date with you. We were talking about how our life would change after the baby was born.
Angela said I’ve just thought of some more things I need to buy. My mind is full of feathers. They say that can happen when you’re pregnant. I remember Jane telling me that she used to throw spoons away after feeding the cat. If Colin hadn’t checked the dustbin one night they would never have understood why all their spoons were missing.
Angela undid her seat belt and gave a sigh of relief. Ooh, What a relief! That seat belt is so tight around my tummy. Babe is getting so big now that there isn’t enough room for both us behind the belt.
Chris protested What are you doing? Buckle up!
Angela laughed Don’t stress, I’m just getting my shopping list from my bag on the floor. I’ll buckle up again. I promise.
It was then that the car behind had ploughed into them. She hadn’t stood a chance. Her body was propelled out of the windscreen. He screeched to a halt and came to rest close to her mangled, bleeding body. He scrambled out of the car and knelt on the road, clutching her hand, too scared to move her. Her eyes opened briefly and he was devastated by the pain he saw there.
Chris felt for Vicki’s hand on his shoulder. He took a few shuddering breaths before continuing:
What happened next is a hazy nightmare. The police and an ambulance arrived. I don’t know who called them. The man from the car behind was sobbing
I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I vaguely heard the words
cell phone and
texting. I heard the paramedics saying that they could detect heart beats of both mother and child. They started to work on Angela and soon they secured her onto a stretcher which they lifted onto a gurney in preparation for the trip to hospital. I was in a daze as I climbed into the ambulance behind her.
He fell silent as he remembered.
All he could do was gaze at his beautiful wife. He was holding her hand and hoping that his strength could be felt by her but tears were coursing down his face and he cursed his weakness.
They rushed her into surgery as soon as they got to the hospital. Chris was pulled back and prevented from following. He was led to the desk but his eyes followed Angela until the gurney disappeared behind the swinging doors which led to the operating wing. He was vaguely aware of people asking questions. He heard his voice replying but his mind was with Angela. What was happening to her? What about the baby? How could this be happening now? Absently he pulled out his wallet and scrabbled in the contents for his medical insurance card. He was trying hard to remain calm but was aware of tears coursing down his cheeks. He didn’t bother to brush them away. He was brought a cup of coffee and was forced to drink it. It was very sweet and it seemed to help calm him...
As I started to calm down, my thoughts became more rational and I realised that you both would be worried. I asked the sister at the desk to contact you.
I don’t know how long I waited while Angela was in surgery. Every second seemed an hour. It was as if I was living in a nightmare but at the same time I knew that I was living in the reality of a senseless situation. At last the surgeon came out to discuss Angela’s injuries. I tried to concentrate on what the doctor was telling me but I kept looking for her – waiting for the doors to open so that I could be with her again. I can, however remember certain phrases but I don’t know what they mean.
The phrases seared through his mind:
"…bones broken…
…internal injuries…,
…baby seems unhurt…,
…coma…,
…Will know more when we do an MRI …,
… bringing her out of theatre soon..."
He started sobbing again. "I was so relieved
