    Foreword

I like to believe that life’s success largely depends on our attitude and how we look at life in general. Everyone, even the prettiest and the richest of us, is said to have some sort of insecurity and inability that at times may render either hopeless or hopeful, depending on what attitude we decide to have and what perspective we decide to choose that would spell the difference in being defeated or victorious in our lives.

I had polio on both legs when I was only 3 years old which is why I am now a wheelchair user for life. Growing up as a person with a disability, there were a lot of struggles and challenges to overcome as I tried to live the most normal life that I possibly can in a society that is not inclusive and accessible especially during that time. Mind you, there were hard times that almost broke me. Perhaps what saved me and kept me going was having this mentality to look at the brighter side of things no matter how dire the situation and always choosing to stay optimistic.  Even though I have a disability, I was determined to make a difference inadvertently proving that success knows no disability or any boundaries.  One of the fields where I got to make a mark on is in the field of Para Powerlifting sport.

I discovered the sport through my male friends who challenged me to a strength test by lifting weights on a barbell. I was the only woman competitor but I won that friendly and informal competition and the rest, as they say, is history.

I became the first Filipino Paralympic Games medallist in the 2000 Sydney, Australia Paralympic Games. I went on to represent and win medals for our country including World Games, Asian Para Games, ASEAN Para Games, and other numerous international competitions. I am the only Filipino Para Athlete to attend 5 Paralympic Games, namely: Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016.

The dream continues, today I still compete. I am training for the qualifying tournaments that would hopefully bring me to my 6th Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan this 2021.

Aside from being a para-athlete, I am now part of the Philippine Paralympic Committee, the umbrella organization that helps train and develop other para-athletes to make a difference by providing them the opportunity to achieve their dream of representing the country for glory.  It brings me much joy and pride to assist younger athletes and become a small part of their achievements.

Now, I would like to turn the spotlight on a kindred spirit who is an achiever in her own right, the beautiful Grace Del Barrio.  She is a successful strength-sport and bikini athlete who, likewise, believes that success knows no disability.  She has achieved another milestone in her life by writing her first book entitled Success Factors: 30 Powerful Steps Used by the Greatest People to Overcome disability and Achieve Their Dreams

Being a Deaf writer was no easy task for her, but because of her belief and determination, she was able to make her dream of writing a book become a reality.

The methods and techniques used in this book are very effective yet simple and can be applied by anyone. This book is recommended for those people who are in doubt of their ability.  It is hoped that as you read it and ponder upon it, you will transform yourself into a better, successful you.
