    Giggle Dust 2.0

W elcome to the party, Zoe, Natalie said, greeting me as I walked into her house. She had become the regular host of parties and other events for an extended group of friends, of which I now got to call myself.

I met Natalie shortly after she got together with Michael. They made for a great couple, which was always good to see. We originally met through mutual friends, but I had been welcomed into the broader group almost immediately.

After giving Natalie a hug, I could sense that she was a little drunk. She seemed a little more gregarious than normal. She was usually quite reserved, although caring, but seeing her now, I got the impression that she loved everyone and everything. I hoped I would be able to catch up before people started singing karaoke.

It wasn’t long before I had a drink in hand and began making the rounds of the party, meeting a few new people while also saying hello to many of my new friends. It was a welcoming group, although I had heard about some strange discord among the core group. Apparently there was a drugs incident at a previous party that saw someone get completely kicked out and another person drift away. I didn’t know the details, but I wasn’t one to pry. Friendships and emotions were complicated and not all friendships were meant to last. That was just life.

Unfortunately, karaoke started before I was sufficiently ready. I simply needed more time to drink and reach a point of inebriation where my anxieties over singing in front of a crowd were eased. That didn’t come easily to me.

Worse, Natalie spent several minutes signing her friends up to sing songs, deciding what song best fit each person.

Zoe, you’re up, came an announcement through the microphone.

What? I asked. I didn’t sign up for a song.

I tried to bow out, but suddenly Natalie was behind me. I know you have a great singing voice. Just get up there and sing.

Fine, I said, marching forward and standing in front of the video screen where the lyrics would run.

I picked up the microphone and looked out at the crowd. I just froze. The music started to play. The lyrics began to scroll on the screen. But I couldn’t move. I just looked out at the many faces and froze.

I can’t do this, I finally said, dropping the microphone
