About this ebook

This is Part VI of the What Lies Beyond The Wall series, Enjoy!

After the collapse, civilization was different! There was chaos and war... and death. The world suffered. The population suffered. But then came reorganization and control!

This is the post-apocalyptic tale of one city's attempt to enforce control and maintain order... and of what happens when outside forces begin to threaten that order.

The year is 3667 and for the first time in its history, Ceradon City is on the verge of expansion. For most of its existence, the city has relied on rigid controls to ensure complacency among its citizenry—including enrolling them in Reprogramming when necessary. But now something’s gone awry in the Reprogramming program and Ceradon City’s “expansion initiative” is at risk for failure. Suddenly Vedd McNeer, an Enforcer with the city’s Department of Enforcement, finds himself entangled in the mystery.

    Chapter 7

It’s called the Phoenix Medallion, Vedd whispered, the same time pulling a coffee cup to his lips, glancing furtively around the room to see if anyone had heard. Maggie sat across from him stabbing a fork at her dinner. Her hair was down. The restaurant was busy and a waitress was refilling her glass. The place was loud with a cacophony of voices, mostly patrons on the verge of drunkenness. Every so often a single baritone voice could be heard erupting with laughter, the sound rising above all else. Then there was a woman whose cackle seemed to go on forever. It was a token given to an elite force of fighters nearly three hundred years ago, Vedd added.

But why? she asked, pulling daintily at flaky, pink fish flesh with a single tine.

It was a symbol of their brotherhood, something they carried to remind them of their purpose and allegiance to one another . . . to their cause.

I’m not sure I get it, she smiled. So what if Steen had some artifact from three hundred years ago?

You have to understand the history. These fighters were the last surviving squadron from the Nation Forces, a group called the Morte et Dabo . . .

Morte et Dabo? Nation Forces? she questioned, a puzzled expression on her face.

It’s French . . . it means ‘I will bring you death’, he smiled, setting his coffee cup carefully atop the table. Maggie frowned. They were an elite group of killers . . . that’s why they existed . . . to kill, he added.

This all sounds so archaic . . . so morbidly archaic, she grimaced, the same time pulling her water glass to her mouth. I’m not sure I can stand to hear anymore.

It’s part of our history, he smiled. "But not a lot of people know
