Chapter 1: The Neem tree
What has happened to you? When will we stop getting these letters? Do you know how much it costs us to send you to this boarding school? With this much money, we could put your siblings to other good schools. Or your father and I could sit tight and spend all the money on good food and good clothes and send all three of you to the government schools like all the other villages kids. Why do we bother to send you in the boarding school?
Lata looked at her son, Bannu. He squatted next to her with his head bowed low and his chin rested on his knees. He kept drawing circles over circles on the ground with a twig from a neem tree, under which they sat.
Are you going to say something or not?
Lata
