Muse: The magazine of science, culture, and smart laughs for kids and children

LETTER of the MONTH

A More Accessible Muse

My grandma has had me subscribed to your magazine for a while now, but I haven’t really been reading the issues.

But not because I don’t like them. Because I’m visually impaired, and when I look at even the covers, all I see is a mess I can’t make sense of. (No offense to your cover artists; pretty much every magazine in existence is like this.)

Specifically, I have a condition called Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), which is caused by a brain injury affecting the way your brain processes images. It’s not very well known, but it’s made it very difficult for me to read magazines.

Fortunately, my mom does look at what comes through our mail, because she pointed out to me the January 2022 issue about vision. She thought I’d find it interesting, so she read me an excerpt from one of the articles (and magazines in general) is that they have a bunch of pictures and are way too visually complex for me. (Textbooks have the exact same problems.)
