    Avalon

Fire licked the door of her closet, making Avalon turn her head. She glanced at the clock with a sigh. He’s only five minutes late . Her long curly red hair once again fell in her face when she bent down to pick up the bookmark she’d dropped, then secured her place in her book she held. She put it away on her desk. Avalon loved reading about werewolves and witches, and part of her wondered if she would ever find love as a demigod.

She stood there waiting for her father, and as always, he was running late. Running the underworld was taxing on Hades. Once a week, he would use her door and visit her and her mother, Mary. Two decades ago, he gave Persephone leave so he could spend more time with Avalon’s mother.

Her walls were painted a deep shade of red with a black dresser, black desk, and dark oak wood bed frame. She wasn’t a fan of the modern metal everything and stuck with her soul colors of red and black in her everyday life.

The door banged opened and out walked a tall god in all black leather. His long black hair moved like there was wind when not an ounce of air flowed in the room. His face brightened with a smile when he saw Avalon.

My beauty. He pulled her into a hug, and the smell of fire filled her lungs. Her father always smelled of smoke from centuries of running the underworld. How are you today?

I’m well, Dad. Just catching up on some reading. Avalon smiled.

You are a demigod. You should be doing more with your life than reading about silly werewolves. Hades never liked how quiet Avalon was, but this also came from the man who, for years, feared she would suddenly die.

You’re the one who likes to keep me locked up, Father.

Well, that ends today. I’ve received word that the prophecy might not have been about you, after all. Hades smiled brightly then kissed the top of her head. Even at twenty-three, she found it nice to be so loved by her father. The mention of the prophecy still made her stomach turn. One female demigod will bring the world to its knees. For the love she has for one will either destroy everything or will bring peace.

Her cousins, Myra and Sirena, were just as connected to the damn prophecy as her. Well, up until now according to her father.

Hades had never been a fan of Zeus banishing him to the underworld, and after centuries, he had come to terms with it and found Mary. Hades loved her mother so much that he wished she could live in the underworld with him. However, Mary would die after too long down there. They had tried it once, but after a few months, Mary had grown so ill that Hades rushed her up. Now they had Avalon’s door to keep them connected.

So, does this mean I can actually explore a bit?

Yes, but you must do me one small favor.

What is that? She leaned away from her father and met his mischievous eyes.

I would like you to meet with Fallon one more time, Hades said quickly.

You have to be joking. Avalon fully moved out of her father’s grasp and stared at him as if he became the three-headed dog that guarded his castle with the hell hounds. The dogs were completely smitten when it came to Avalon, but an intruder, not so much. Fallon is an arrogant prick that thinks I’m just going to fall into his freaking arms. Memories of the last time Fallon came over for dinner made Avalon want to barf. The demigod was the youngest son of Aphrodite herself.

He’s a demigod worthy of your time.

Then he can go visit with my cousins, Sirena and Maya. I don’t want him. Avalon crossed her hands over her chest and glared at her father.

His brow rose and his tone deepened. You will do this, or you can stay in this house. A hint of a challenge rested in his eyes.

You’re not going to let up, are you? Avalon studied her father’s face. Damn him to the underworld!

It’s your choice, my beauty. Hades walked out of her room to see Mary. Avalon clenched her fists and took a deep breath. She desperately wanted to be outside again, without her parents looming over her.

Fine, I will go to lunch with him after I go shopping with your card, Avalon spoke as she strolled into the living room.

Wonderful. Now that that’s settled, why don’t you go shopping now so I can have your mother all to myself. Hades dropped his black card on the coffee table, lifted Mary into his arms and walked like a barbarian taking his prize home.

Have fun, sweetheart, Mary called out before the door closed. A little giggle made Avalon’s skin crawl.

Gross. Avalon grabbed the card and headed out the door as fast as her feet would carry her. She reached the elevator and hit the down button a few dozen times to get the damn doors to close faster. Once on the ground floor, she sauntered out into San Diego. The air filled her lungs, and she took in the busy streets of the bustling town. After hailing a cab, she was in the best shopping mall. Avalon immersed herself in clothes and tried on dresses and jeans.

You look great. Fallon’s voice broke Avalon of her musings of a slimming black dress.

You look like an ass. Avalon turned to Fallon with a smirk on her lips. His shaggy blonde hair made him look even younger. He stood two feet taller than Avalon, but his body could only be defined as scrawny. Even for a god spawn he didn’t have a lot of appeal with a plain face, no muscles or meat on his bones and the hint of a scar next to his left eye. Fallon chuckled and pulled her into an unwelcome hug, and she shoved him back. I don’t want to be with you, so stop pushing it.

Hey, I’m only doing what your father instructed.

What the underworld are you talking about?
