    Maya

Maya dug her toes into the black sand as the ocean worked against her body. The pressure had been strong while she sank down and her body adjusted. Thick darkness consumed her senses, but she knew this place like the back of her hand.

Pacific blackdragons approached her, leading the way. They were ambush predators; their bodies dark black and their stomachs coated with black tissue to block out any light produced by the bioluminescent animals they eat. They had several rows of specialized light cells, called photophores, that are used to attract mates. A separate light organ at the end of the long barbell hung down from the chin and gave off light in the dark as her eyes settled.

A little shimmer ahead had Maya taking her first step toward her father’s domain. Technically, she could have portaled in, but part of her enjoyed feeling the water and pressure against her skin.

Over six thousand meters down on the ocean surface felt like home. Being a demigod had its perks and downfalls. The biggest downfall being the damn prophecy now hanging directly on her neck like a fucking noose. Her two cousins had at least been part of it, but not anymore.

A year ago, Sirena changed everything when she was ready to sacrifice herself. The prophecy had two more lines; at least that’s what her father told her. And today she wanted answers. Needed answers.

With each step, she repeated the part of the prophecy she knew.

One female demigod will bring the world to its knees. For the love she has for one will either destroy everything or bring peace. One shall fail to defend herself, clearing the one from any future in this prophecy. One willing to sacrifice, giving peace to the monsters she controls.

She stepped inside where the magic pulsed across her skin, warding the fish to stay away because the next second she stepped into a pocket of air. The scent of salt water surrounded her as her body naturally changed from breathing water to breathing air.

The bubble was about five miles by five miles with a shipwreck in the middle—an ancient fishing vessel that hit bad seas when Poseidon was pissed off about something. He saved the five fishermen from drowning and made it look like a miracle.

The ship was a reminder that mistakes can happen at any time.

Poseidon stood near the side of the ship, running his hand through his thick white beard. His eye color changed like the colors of the ocean and they locked onto Maya.

Evening, child. He smiled, flashing his bright white, perfect fucking teeth. Hints of jealousy rolled through her chest, making it tighten. Her teeth were straight but nowhere near perfect.

Hello, father. She smiled and took a few more steps forward.

His grin faltered then brightened again as if she hadn’t just pissed him off. She knew what she’d said, and she had done it on purpose.

You asked to see me? His brow arched as he walked forward, meeting her halfway. He wore a pair of dark blue jeans with a tight black shirt. Every woman on the planet loved to stare at the god of the sea. Hell, even men who were straight as an arrow loved to stare.

I need to know the last few lines of that damn prophecy. She licked her lower lip and hoped he would finally cave. She needed this more than anything. Needed to know how she could save the damn world. She didn’t want to bring the world to its knees. Maya’s heart raced in her chest as she stared at her father. Once again, he refused to give her any more information, even though she was the last freaking demigod connected to the prophecy.

Come the fuck on. I’m not bad, so just tell me! The smell of salt water grew stronger, but she didn’t care if this little bubble suddenly filled with water; she could talk under water just like her father could.

I made a deal with Zeus and Hades. I can’t break that. He clenched his fists at his sides.

But you can let me ruin lives? Your brothers are more important than your daughter? Oh, that’s right, you have lots of daughters, unlike Hades. Might as well fucking kill me and stop the prophecy from happening all together. In a rush, water covered her feet but stopped at her ankles.

I’m not going to kill you. His eyes changed to a deep green, and the water filtered out of the bubble he created.

I never thought you truly hated me until now. She shook her head and turned to walk away. This was getting her nowhere, and looking at her father for another moment was too fucking much to bear.

I don’t hate you. Maybe you should go see your brother in Wyoming.

The one you pawned off to Medusa. She didn’t bother looking back as her feet carried her to the edge of the bubble.

No, your older brother. The words had her feet faltering and her heart racing. Maya hadn’t spoken to
