The obnoxious dance music just wouldn’t end. Chana slammed her textbook down and let out a loud, frustrated sigh. It was hard enough studying the night before an exam without her neighbor Gabby making so much noise. Usually Chana’s mom would storm over there and threaten to call the police, but her mom and stepdad were out of town to see Aunt Jemma’s baby. Chana was stuck to deal with this on her own.

She stared at the poster next to her desk of the central and peripheral nervous systems. All it did was remind her of what her annoying stepdad Haim always said: "You’ve got to grow some nerve, Chana. How will you be a successful doctor if you can’t grow a little nerve?"

She hated her stepdad sometimes. Mr. hot-shot cardiac surgeon who swept Mom off her feet and convinced her that Chana should go into medicine. She didn’t want to be a doctor. Heck, were it up to her she wouldn’t be in college at all. She knew she was smart, but that didn’t mean she wanted to spend so many years of her life buried in books.

There was a loud splash of water next door, followed by high-pitched laughter. Soon, she heard someone scream, Get me a towel, I’m freezing! which only made the others laugh more.

That does it, she thought. They’re having too much fun for a Monday night. If she was stuck with her nose buried in a textbook, then her neighbors shouldn’t be allowed to have fun either.

The studious girl pushed herself out of her chair, ran a hand through her messy, dark brown bob, and stormed out of her room.

Chana had never been tall enough to see over the back fence, so she had to plant a large, upturned bucket on the ground and step on it. When she could peer into the neighbors’ yard, she saw a couple of tall, bamboo torches where Gabby and two other girls sat. Gabby and Chana were the same age but could not have looked more different. Chana was a short, dark-haired Jewish girl, while Gabby was tall and athletic with fiery red Scottish hair.

The three young women sat at an outdoor glass table. Gabby’s large inground pool was behind them, and its surface bobbed like it had recently been disturbed. A tall girl with dark skin sat wet and shivering on a chair, a thick towel wrapped around her. You’re such a bitch, Gabby! she said, though she had a wide smile on her face. I can’t believe you made me do that!

It’s not my fault you suck at this game, the red-haired beauty said, dealing out colorful playing cards. Next to her was another girl Chana didn’t know. She had bleach-blonde hair and dark roots, and she wore hot-pink tennis shorts and a white sports top. She had a South American look about her.

Each girl was dealt their hand and looked ready to start a new game.

Um, Gabby? Chana called over the loud music. Her neighbor didn’t hear. She cleared her throat and tried again. Hey, Gabby! she yelled. Gabby, over here! She waved one skinny, pale arm around in the air.

Her neighbor finally turned to her. Excuse me, girls, she said, and put her cards face-down on the table. No peeking! she commanded over her shoulder, which made her friends giggle.

Gabby approached the fence. She had a smattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks which moved when she smiled. Hey, Chana! Thank God it’s you, I was worried you were your mom.

Chana shook her head. No. She and Haim are visiting my aunt for a few days.

Gabby leaned casually against the fence, her smile radiant as always. Lucky you. I’d hang myself if I had to live with those two killjoys. No offense.

She ignored that. I’ve got this big exam tomorrow, Gabby, and I really need to study. Do you think you and your friends could, I don’t know, keep the music down? And maybe try not to scream so much?

Gabby’s eyes widened. She looked genuinely shocked. Oh gosh, Chana, I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize!

Relief washed over her. It’s okay, I’m not mad or anything! Just turn the volume down. Haim bought me these really cheap headphones that are supposed to be noise-cancelling, but they don’t do squat to stop any-

Gabby was shaking her head. She interrupted her, No Chana, I mean I’m sorry you’re stuck at home studying for a dumb exam while your parents are out of town! If I’d known I would’ve asked you to come hang out with us!

A rock fell in her stomach. Her neighbor wasn’t going to make this easy. Thank you, Gabby, but I can’t. Can you go easy on the noise a little?

She shook her head again. Can’t do that, hon. We’re having too much fun over here. Noor and Julia are helping me housesit. No parents, no rules. Oh God, you should have seen it when I made Noor jump naked into the pool! It was so funny! I’m kicking butt at this game, and those girls are going to do everything I say. She stepped away from the fence and waved her over. Come on! Climb over and you can play with us!

Chana was starting to wish she hadn’t come out at all. I can’t, Gabby, really. But thank you.

Yes you can! Ten minutes, okay? Think of it as a study break.

She was messing with her. Even if Chana did play with them, that didn’t mean they would turn the music down.

Gabby’s fellow house sitters stared at her. The one in the towel leaned over and whispered something to her friend, and they both laughed. Chana knew they were making fun of her. She felt heat rise to her cheeks.

Come meet my friends! You’ll love them, trust me. Gabby’s ocean blue eyes were large and inviting.

Maybe she could use a break. She had been studying for almost four hours straight. What’s more, she had always found it hard to say no to Gabby. Maybe it was because she was so pretty and cool. She’d always been jealous of her neighbor, even as kids. Not just her looks, but her personality. Everybody liked Gabby and wanted to be friends with her. The only person who didn’t like her was Chana’s Mom, and Gabby was right about her. She was a total killjoy.

Chana gave up. Alright, ten minutes. But promise you’ll turn down the music after.

Sure, of course! Gabby said with a wry smile. Chana couldn’t help but notice her lovely, slender back and round bum as she walked away from her. Gosh, she was so pretty.

Oh heck, Chana thought. This is the best I can do. She pulled herself onto the fence, knowing full well that she wasn’t a good climber. Quivering, she turned herself around and hung over the other side, the wood digging into her palms. She stretched one leg and felt her toe brush against the ground. Without taking time to think it through, she let go.

She hit the ground flat on her back. Oof!

She heard embarrassing giggles behind her, and her face grew hot. Freaking klutz! she thought. Two hands suddenly grabbed her under the arms and, with surprising strength, lifted her straight up on her feet. You okay? Gabby asked. Chana stared up at her tall neighbor, hating
