The throng of parishioners left the church, shining with renewed spirits. Several men and women crowded around Father Francis McGee, complimenting the sermon and regaling him with news of their daughters’ success in college. The priest nodded absently; now that mass was over, he probably just wanted to get home and sleep the rest of his weekend away.

Sister Rosa Maria Luciani was an outlier in this scene. The tall nun stood well away from the crowd of believers, her eyes gazing down Church Road with her arms folded over her ample breasts. While her ears picked up slivers of conversation, nothing the parishioners bleated was as important as what had captured her attention.

A few noticed her and wondered aloud what preoccupied the Holy Sister. But none of them dared to approach and ask. Sister Maria was the backbone of both the local church and its adjoining school, and she was famous for her icy demeanor and her no-BS approach to both education and religion. Her cold, silver eyes could penetrate a person’s soul and reveal the hypocrisies therein. It was much more pleasant speaking with Father Francis, who was so advanced in age and service to the church that speaking to him was like speaking to an agreeable statue.

Sister Angelica was the only one brave enough to approach her. She stepped up to Maria’s side and placed a gentle hand on her back. You look tense, Sister. I mean, more than usual.

Maria’s eyes softened when they fell on her friend. Sister Angelica followed Maria’s gaze down the street to where a large, recently-completed building stood. Its eastern architecture, with its arched thresholds and domed roofs, stood in stark contrast to the simple, steepled design of their own church. A keen eye could see crowds of women and girls in long dresses and headscarves leaving that building.

Oh, Sister Angie said. I didn’t realize it had opened already.

Two Sundays ago, was Sister Maria’s curt response. But then her mouth turned up in a knowing smirk, and she took a sidelong glance at her friend. Not that I expected you to know.

Sister Angie bowed her head to hide her shy smile. She blushed but looked up at Maria with grateful eyes.

I guess from the way you’ve been smiling this week that you enjoyed your little vacation?

Sister Angelica nodded. Very much so. But to be honest, I barely saw anything of the town. We hardly left the hotel room.

Sister Maria closed her eyes and smiled, happy for her friend. I’m glad to hear it, Sister.

Angelica glanced at the parishioners, then edged closer to Maria. She dropped her voice to a whisper. "Maria, Casey was wild! I know they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it was like she hadn’t seen me in years! I swear, from the moment we were alone together it was like a switch flipped and she became an animal! She shivered visibly with delight. I’ve never seen her like that. The college life must have awakened something in her. She giggled. Not that I’m complaining!"

Sister Maria nodded, genuinely happy that her friend could experience such an unbridled sexual life.

Sister Angie took her hand then and looked into Maria’s eyes with love. Thank you, Maria. For everything. For letting me have the time off, for helping me organize the hotel and the dinners and everything. I don’t know where my life would be without your love and support.

Maria wasn’t one to revel in gratitude, but she knew the sincerity of her friend’s words and responded to them with something she rarely did: she leaned in and embraced her. She felt the other woman’s heart beat against her own breast and sensed the love therein. She also felt the hard length of Sister Angie’s not-so-little secret press against her leg. Reminiscing about her time spent alone with her former student Casey O’Connor had clearly awakened Angie’s desire. Casey had graduated with flying colors six months prior and was now living in an little upstate college town. The hotel had been a must: from what Maria had been told, Casey was sharing a house with three other girls. Doubtless she and Angelica had needed as much privacy as they could get given their months apart.

When they pulled away from each other, Angie wiped a tear from her eye and sighed. The two women resumed looking down the street, and Sister Angie returned to the original subject. What are you worried about, exactly? With them?

Maria shrugged. We’ve been the spiritual center of this community for decades, Angie. For the first time, we have some competition.

"But are they really competition? I mean, it’s not like they’re going to steal parishioners from us. Our flock are as likely to convert to Islam as their’s are to convert to Catholicism. And who knows, maybe they’re just nice, normal people. We could pay them a visit one day. Say hello, make them feel welcome."

Sister Maria didn’t say it, but she suspected that two weeks of limitless sex with the horny young college student had put Angie in a perpetually loving state. It was sweet, and she loved the person Sister Angie was now compared to the repressed killjoy she had been when they’d first met. But Sister Maria was more practical; she was not
