“Now,” the teacher continued. “It isn’t enough that I stand here and lecture you, much as I enjoy hearing the sound of my own voice.” Every girl rolled her eyes. “But since everyone here is eighteen, I thought we would make things a little more, well, practical today.”

This got their attention. Girls immediately began chattering, their faces beaming with excitement.

“Here is the list of pairs I’ve put together myself. All those whose partners are absent will be assigned together, or will join me up the front.” A titter rose. The teacher flipped a page on her clipboard and cleared her throat. “Stanley and LeHorn. Nichols and Prabhu. Chang and Finn.” This went on, with girls partnering up as their names were read out. Some looked less than enthused about their pairing, but others came together with giggles and coy smiles. One girl demanded that she be paired with her best friend, and the teacher barked so loud that Leslie nearly jumped out of her skin.

Once they were all paired off, something became uncomfortably clear to Leslie. Her name hadn’t been called out.

“Um, m-miss?” she said, raising her hand weakly and trying to get the teacher’s attention over the noise. “M-miss? I didn’t... I mean I’m new, and I don’t...I didn’t...”

The teacher took one glance at her, and then exhaled through her. “Sorry, they told me I’d have a new kid today. Totally skipped my mind.” She flipped over the page. “Name?”

“L-Leslie Hall,” she stammered.

“Leslie...Hall...” she repeated quietly, writing it down. She then placed the pencil in her breast pocket and removed her sunglasses. Her eyes were a beautiful ocean green, and they crinkled at the corners as she smiled. In an instant, this teacher was friendly and had none of the hardness she had shown before. “Nice to meet you, Leslie. I’m Ms. Hawke.” She held out her hand.

Leslie smiled back and shook her hand, albeit a little tentatively. “Nice to meet you too, Ms. Hawke.”

The teacher looked out at the crowd. “Well, looks like everyone has their partner today. You’ll have to be mine. Hope that’s alright with you?”

“Mm-hmm. I mean, yes, that’s fine, Ms. Hawke.”

The teacher chuckled, throwing her a mischievous look. “Relax, kid. You’ve picked a great day for your first PE lesson.”

It was Leslie Hall’s first day at White Reef High, and she had never felt so intimidated in her life.

The awkward girl with a dark brown bob and glasses stood shyly against the wall of the indoor basketball court, her small white hands behind her back and her dark eyes scanning her fellow students. At barely five-foot even, she was surrounded by tall, long-limbed girls with toned bodies and busts that made her burn with envy. Their tops hugged their breasts tightly over their sports bras, and any time they raised their arms their shirts rose, exposing their athletic midriffs. Their blue shorts were similarly small, most of them barely reaching down past their hips.

Half of her class looked to be six foot or taller, and they joked loudly and openly with one another. The other half were girls that looked a little more like Leslie, in that they were of average height and build, but they were still so pretty and had lively, active personalities that the new kid couldn’t help but feel like an outsider.

Leslie had always been the quiet, shy type, and while she had coasted along under the radar in her old school’s PE class, she feared it would be much harder here when everybody looked so active and physical.

She caught a trio of girls talking quietly and looking in her direction, and she instinctively shrunk back, wanting to sink into the ground and disappear. The three girls were tall and fit, and carried themselves with all the confidence in the world. The girl in the middle had bright red hair and a strong face, and she said something that made the other two giggle. Leslie felt her face burn. Why did Mom have to take that new job? she asked herself for the thousandth time. Didn’t she ever consider if I wanted to move away? And to an all-girls school?

She tugged at her new polo and shorts, not feeling at all like she belonged inside them.

A shrill whistle cut through the chatter, and all the students went silent. The PE teacher in a white polo and black shorts marched into the basketball court, carrying a clipboard and a small plastic box. She was exactly like the other girls: tall, fit, and powerful.
