~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
“Is she one of your students?” a teammate near the back asked. “Does Melissa give you a hard time in class?” she asked mischievously, the meaning behind her question not lost on Leslie.
“Hall, I appreciate the support, but you need to leave. You don’t belong here.”
“Yes, I do!” she insisted. “You guys need all the encouragement you can get. You’re dying out there. I’m here to tell you-”
“To tell us what?” Psycho Cin asked, cynicism permeating from every word. She glared at the teen with hard, silver eyes. The sides of her head were shaved and her hair styled up in a shiny, red-tipped mohawk. “To try harder? To believe in ourselves?” She threw her towel on the floor. “They’re laughing at us out there. This team is a joke. We are a joke.”
This set off a wave of arguments. The fifteen teammates hurled insults at one another, and some even started throwing kneepads and helmets. The tension had clearly reached the tipping point, and in the middle of it all was little Leslie Hall. Leslie couldn’t bear the thought of the Roughnecks skating out to the track and being laughed at like in the first half of the game.
“Roughnecks!” she yelled, surprising herself as her voice cut above all the bickering. “There’s no point fighting like this. The Assassins have been whipping your butts for half an hour straight, but you still have the second half to turn this around,” she insisted, trying to meet each one in the eye. “You guys can do so much better! Look at how big and strong you all are; that’s why you’re called the Roughnecks! All you have to do is give it all you’ve got, and I know you can come out on top and beat those Assassins!”
“Oh, you do?” one of them asked. “Aren’t we lucky, girls, to have the support of this random teenager?”
“What makes you think we’re going to turn this around?” another woman asked. “Do you think your little high school pep talk is what we need?”
This gave her pause. Leslie had an idea about what she wanted to say next, but hesitated. Every eye was on her, waiting.
Leslie looked at Ms. Hawke, who gave her an encouraging nod. It was then that she realized what she was here for. She knew how to pass this assignment, and with flying colors.
All she had to do was get this team to win.
“If...” she began, feeling herself grow excited at the idea. “If you guys win, I’ll be here to celebrate with you. Your number one fan, right here in the middle of the locker room, helping every single one of you celebrate your victory.” The teen made sure she met each woman’s eyes, holding it there until the message was loud and clear.
What am I doing? This is crazy. There’s fifteen of them, and only one of me!
Once it clicked, every skater’s eyes widened. Every last angry or dejected expression changed to one of excitement. Old foes started sharing smiles. Some bit their lips with anticipation.
“So?” Leslie asked. “Are you guys in?”
They all nodded.
“We’ll go hard,” Ms. Hawke said, her eyes glimmering with excitement. “If you promise the same after we win.”
    Zara wanted to hit the computer screen. She’d been waiting for half an hour and the school wi-fi was still down. The teen read the first sentence of her essay, and her heart sank. ‘Condoms have been around for many years and have been a useful but annoying asset to the human race.’
    She looked around, hoping to find anyone who could help. Since the wi-fi had gone down, all but a few stragglers had abandoned the library and gone home; an option Zara didn’t have. She knew the moment she stepped into her bedroom and fired up her laptop, she’d go straight to her favorite porn streaming sites and lose all hope of getting the essay done.
    She heard a quiet humming and turned to find the librarian Miss Fielding neatly slotting books into a shelf.
    Miss Fielding! she shouted, waving her hand. When is the internet coming back on?
    The young librarian turned and shushed her. Zara, this is a library, keep your voice down!
    The teenage futa threw her hands in the air. "There’s barely anyone here! And why are you still here? It’s after five."
    Because I take my job seriously. If you girls had more respect for this place, I wouldn’t have to stay back every afternoon cleaning your mess and putting your books back.
    The teenager rolled her eyes and swung on her chair, her foot resting on the edge of the desk. She looked at her black phone screen.
    Are you sure you don’t have a charger, Miss? If nothing else, she could use her data to get some research done.
    For the last time, Zara, no! The librarian then dropped a book. Shoot, look what you made me do.
    Miss Fielding was such a dork. She was nothing like the girls at White Reef High; always so serious, aloof and frigid. Her hair was tied back in a tight, mousey bun that made her look way too severe. And who wore a grey cardigan with a beige, ankle-length skirt? What was she, a nun?
    The teen sighed. Much as she hated to admit it, she had no choice but to miss the deadline for this essay.
    I’m heading home, Miss Fielding, she heard a familiar voice say. Thanks for helping me find that Emily Dickinson book.
    Good night, Amber. And you’re welcome! Drive home safely, okay?
    I will.
    Zara looked towards where the voice had come from. Lo and behold, there was Amber Knight, the goth nerd she and her friend Leslie had done the last PE assignment with. She had a grey camo backpack slung over one shoulder and carried a bundle of books under her arm. Zara and Amber hadn’t really spoken since failing that assignment, but Zara didn’t want to be rude so when her classmate walked past she raised a hand and said, Hey, Amber.
    She stopped. The smile she had just shown Miss Fielding disappeared. Zara noticed that she had a new, silver ring piercing on the right side of her bottom lip. Oh. Hey, Zara, she said, making the ring bobble.
    If you’re still here, I guess you left Ms. Hawke’s essay until the last minute too, huh?
    She shook her head. No. I finished that a week ago.
    What? Then what are you here for?
    Amber flicked her dark bangs away from her eyes. No offence, but I doubt you actually care. I’m not stupid, Zara. I know you’re just trying to score some help from me.
    She felt color rising to her face. The teen futanari bit her lip and tried to keep her cool. "You know what? You got me. I didn’t even look at this essay until this morning, and now I realize that I’ve been an idiot and I should have knuckled down and finished this ages ago. Now I’m going to fail another one of Ms. Hawke’s assignments because I’m lazy and dumb. Are you happy?"
    Amber threw her a look. Did you ever stop to think that you’re not lazy, you’re just really stubborn and mean?
    Stubborn and mean? What are you talking about?
    "You would rather do this essay entirely on your own, and leave it until the night before, and ask for my help finishing it, instead of just swallowing your stupid pride and asking to be my partner."
    She was lost. Your partner for what?
    Amber rolled her eyes. For the assignment, what else?
    We’re not allowed partners. We’re meant to do this ourselves.
    "Are you serious? Zara, did you even read the assignment sheet?"
    Zara fished through her bag, pushing aside her track shorts, a paper bag from the pharmacy, a
