About this ebook

This book describes Sleeping Beauty Syndrome, Diagnosis and Treatment and Related Diseases

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome is a person who sleeps excessively but the sleeping beauty is more likely to be an adolescent male than a female.
So do not expect a handsome prince to kiss the sleeping beauty unless he is gay.

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome (Kleine Levin Syndrome) is a rare and complex neurological disorder that produces excessive sleepiness, changed mood, and abnormal behavior in those who have it.

This sleepiness is not like the tiredness of a person who got too little sleep, it is far more serious.

People with this disorder can sleep for up to 20 hours a day for many days only waking to use the bathroom, eat, or engage in other activities in a lethargic manner.

These episodes can be intermittent.

They can happen rarely with years separating or they can happen regularly within several years.

During an episode the person can seem to be in poor mental or physical health, but between these incidents they may appear totally healthy.

Besides excessive sleepiness, patients with Sleeping Beauty Syndrome may have other unpleasant symptoms during an episode.

One of the more frequent symptoms is extreme hunger (hyper-phagia) and eccentric food cravings.

Many patients have documented that during the few wakeful hours, they will overindulge on junk food or foods they normally do not prefer.

Someone who is likely to stick to a healthy diet may consume a bag of chips and box of cookie or someone may yearn for hot wings when they normally prefer milder flavors.

This may produce weight gain during a SBS episode along with other health disorders that may happen from a poor diet.

Some other symptoms may involve abnormal behaviors during and before the start of an episode.

The person may appear confused, not clear mentally with a reduced understanding of the world and feel intensified sensations.

Many people also develop a hyper-sexuality during this time.

When they are awake, they may appear distant like they are not fully conscious of what is going on.

They may be more bad-tempered or depressed, finding little passion or desire to engage in activities they once enjoyed.

The disorder involves adolescents mainly but can happen in younger children and adults.

At the start of an episode the patient becomes increasingly drowsy and sleeps for most of the day and night (hyper-somnolence), occasionally waking only to eat or go to the bathroom.

Each episode persists form days, weeks or months during which time all normal activities stop.

Patients are not capable of taking care of themselves or attending school and work.

In between episodes, those with SBS seem to be in perfect health with no evidence of behavioral or physical dysfunction.

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome episodes may persist for 10 years or more.

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome is occasionally referred as Kleine Levin Syndrome.

It is essential to note that this disorder, like others, may have different side effects on everyone.

Due to the inadequate knowledge, it is difficult for doctors to diagnose this disorder.

In fact, it takes an average of 4 years for most patients to be correctly diagnosed with Sleeping Beauty Syndrome.

There is no dependable test that can identify whether a patient has this disorder.

Instead, the diagnosis is diagnosed by eliminating other diseases.

Due to poor knowledge of Sleeping Beauty Syndrome, there is no definite way to treat the disorder.

There is no known treatment for Sleeping Beauty Syndrome but there are ways to treat its symptoms.

One method is stimulant pill such as modafinil while lithium may prevent the disease.

    Introduction

I have been writing medical articles for my blog: http://kennethkee.blogspot.com (A Simple Guide to Medical Disorder) for the benefit of my patients since 2007.

My purpose in writing these simple guides was for the health education of my patients.

Health Education was also my dissertation for my Ph.D (Healthcare Administration).

I then wrote an autobiography account of my journey as a medical student to family doctor on my other blog: http://afamilydoctorstale.blogspot.com.

This autobiography account A Family Doctor’s Tale was combined with my early A Simple Guide to Medical Disorders into a new Wordpress Blog A Family Doctor’s Tale on http://kenkee481.wordpress.com.

From which many free articles from the blog was taken and put together into 800 eBooks.

Some people have complained that the simple guides are too simple.

For their information they are made simple in order to educate the patients.

The later books go into more details of medical disorders.

The first chapter is always from my earlier blogs which unfortunately tends to have typos and spelling mistakes.

Since 2013, I have tried to improve my spelling and writing.

As I tried to bring the patient the latest information about a disorder or illness by reading the latest journals both online and offline, I find that I am learning more and improving on my own medical knowledge in diagnosis and treatment for my patients.

My diagnosis and treatment capability has improved tremendously from my continued education.

Just by writing all these simple guides I find that I have learned a lot from your reviews (good or bad), criticism and advice.

I am sorry for the repetitions in these simple guides as the second chapters onwards have new information as compared to my first chapter taken from my blog.

I also find repetition definitely help me and maybe some readers to remember the facts in the books more easily.

I apologize if these repetitions are irritating to some readers.

    Sleeping Beauty Syndrome

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome is a person who sleeps excessively but the sleeping beauty is more likely to be an adolescent male than a female.

What Is Sleeping Beauty Syndrome (SBS)?

Sleeping Beauty Syndrome (Kleine Levin Syndrome) is a rare and complex neurological disorder that produces excessive sleepiness, changed mood, and abnormal behavior in those who have it.

This sleepiness is not like the tiredness of a person who got too little sleep, it is far more serious.

It is essential to note that this disorder, like others, may have different side effects on everyone.

What is the cause of Sleeping Beauty Syndrome?

    Cause

The precise cause of Sleeping Beauty Syndrome is still not known.

There are indications that injury to the hypothalamus could be a contributing factor.

The hypothalamus is the area of the brain that controls and regulates sleep, appetite, body temperature, and similar functions.

Any abnormalities in this part of the brain can interrupt the typical cycles these cells follow.

With the abnormal appetite and sleep patterns that patients with Sleeping Beauty Syndrome develop, it seems likely that this area of the brain may be affected.

Another theory is that Sleeping Beauty Syndrome starts from a type of autoimmune disorder.

These disorders induce the body’s immune system to attack healthy cells besides the disease and infection cells it normally fights.

There are over 80 known autoimmune diseases that produce a range of symptoms such as severe inflammation.

Many frequent SBS symptoms support what is apparent in patients with an autoimmune disorder.

Further research and testing is required to find concrete evidence in order to support this theory.

    Risk Factors

Fortunately, not many people will develop
