The Missing Pencil

You search through your things one last time and blink back tears. There’s no denying it, your pencil is gone. It’s your lucky pencil, though it doesn’t look like much, just a yellow pencil that nobody had ever chewed on. Now it’s gone.

Are you all right? Pippa asks from the doorway.

You quickly gather your things together and wipe your eyes, hoping she doesn’t see that you’ve been crying. Who cries over a pencil?

The problem with Pippa is that she’s like you, a werefox. And because she’s older, she knows how to keep some of her fox senses even while she looks like a little girl. She can see and smell when you’re upset. Her eyes narrow and she steps towards you. What’s wrong? she asks.

You look away, at the dingy white wall, at the steeply slanted ceiling, at the bookshelf crammed full of books, and at the window that lets the fading sunlight in. Dust motes dance in the air, giving it a golden quality that would be beautiful if you weren’t so sad.
