    Zavn - Hayden West

    Chapter 1

The rumble of the powerful engine hummed through him. Gang grinned as he punched the accelerator down and the low slung car responded. Just like a lover with the perfect reaction to the necessary caress.

His phone beeped in his ear and he answered with a touch.

    Talk to me.

    Bro, where are you?

His smile was for a completely different reason than the sapphire blue car traveling at a high speed across the deserted desert highway.

Mate. Good to hear from you. Where do you think I am. I’m working.

His brother from a different mother laughed. You have one hell of a job man. Driving fast and dodging cops. Seriously, where are you, location wise?

Somewhere in Nevada why? He eased off the tiny accelerator.

    I‘m in Phoenix.

Why? The car fell to what most considered a normal speed.

"Work thing. I’m here with Omri, as well and thought it would be nice to see you if you were close enough.

He missed his brother. Let me see, I think I can swing by.

Pulling out his phone he checked his schedule. This was manageable. He only had to switch a few things around to make it happen. And he would.

How long are you there for?

Just got in. Here for about a week.

Shot me your address and I’ll be there as soon as I can.

"Try not to break all the speed limit laws."

Gang laughed even as he depressed the accelerator, Once more. The desert becoming more of a blur.

    No promises, bro.

While they didn’t share the same blood or DNA, Mate was one of four others he would lay down his life for without thought. They were his brothers in all sense of the word.

The following day he tossed his keys to the valet guy and jogged inside the hotel. Scanning the interior, he smiled and hurried to his brother. The tall border patrol agent leaned against the bar, drinking.

Walking up, Gang slid beside him. Had to be your badge that got you in here. Lord knows you to evil and suspicious looking otherwise.

    Gang!

They tugged and once he got his drink they went to a table in the back.

You are looking good, man. How are you? Mate Aarden sat forward and curved his fingers around the glass. He did look good but there was a strain around his eyes that hadn’t been there before.

Settling in. Been traveling a bit, training. You know.

He did. Not like how it was for a member of law enforcement, but he understood. Gang nodded but kept quiet. Waiting. There was something else at play here and he wanted to know what it was.

But he allowed Mate to keep the pace he wished. He wasn’t a man you rushed. He played things close to the vest. Always had.

They were on their third round when Mate leaned back and push his glass to the side.

    I could use your help.

All you ever have to do is ask.

That’s what I am doing. Asking you to trust me.

I already do. Unease rose within him.

"Remember that. Come on.’’ He finished his drink and got to his feet.

Gang followed. His third left half full. Outside he got into the passenger side as Mate got behind the wheel. Holding his consul, he watched the landscape stream by. The silence did not bother him. The nervousness his brother had, did

They pulled off into a vacant place, away from anything. Or anyone.

Again following his lead, he hopped out after Mate had and walked to his side.

    What’s going on?

Omri wanted to talk to you.

Gang thought about the man who completed his brother. Tall black imposing.

    And the hotel wouldn’t work?

Hard for him to do this then. He gestured up and Gang swore.

Fuck. He went for his gun but Mate stopped him.

    Trust me.

He was legit staring at an angel.

I am no angel, I am a Virtue.

And he was ready to piss himself.

Zavn pushed a hand through his hair as he stared at the scene before him. Humans playing on equipment that looked more like to be something they used to train for battle. But these little ones, children, screamed not with fear or pain, but happiness and excitement as they spent time on them.

More and more he’d become fascinated with the human behaviors that he didn’t see displayed in his kind. They had rules and ways to be and act, however, these innately fragile creatures threw caution to the wind and faced these things
