Introducing Finding Chika
Finding Chika: A Little Girl, an Earthquake, and the Making of a Family' is a memoir written by acclaimed writer Mitch Albom about his relationship with a five-year-old girl named Chika Jeune. Chika was an orphan girl who was born in Haiti three days before an earthquake struck the small Caribbean country in North America. The earthquake that occurred in 2010 was responsible for large scale devastation of the already struggling country. Haiti is the poorest country in the 'western hemisphere, and the earthquake of 7.0 magnitude was the most destructive natural calamity ever to set foot in the poverty-ridden country. She somehow survived it, even though her family's cinderblock house collapsed around her.
With the need to do something for the Haitians, the author Mitch Albom took over an orphanage situated in Port Au Prince, the capital city of Haiti. The orphanage provides care and support to over 40+ orphans. When Chika was two years old, her mother died giving birth to a baby brother. Not much later, Chika was brought to the orphanage. This is where the author met Chika and was instantly attracted to the little girl. Like all other orphans, someone had left Chika at the orphanage door and never returned to take her back. Chika grew among the other children and caretakers and instantly bonded with everyone due to her curious and loving nature.
The author and his wife were childless themselves, and they soon found that they could love other children even if they didn't have one of their own. All was going well until one day, Chika was diagnosed with a terminal disease. Doctors all over Haiti were consulted to no avail as the disease was beyond the grasp of local doctors. The author then decided to take Chika
