Confessions of a Recruiter - Eliza Northcote

    Confessions of a Recruiter:

    The Truth about Recruitment Agencies

    Eliza Northcote

The only parachute in this book is the figurative piece of silk that Eliza Northcote used to jump off the Recruitment Agency plane! If you’re looking for a new job and need to capture the attention of an employer should you really use Recruitment Agencies?

Finally - an expose about the job search industry and all the tricks Recruiters use to fill employment vacancies while charging their clients bucket loads.   Here's a ‘tell all’ memoir with anecdotes from Eliza’s recruitment career.

You’ll never job search the same way again!

    ––––––––

Eliza Northcote is a pseudonym for a Recruitment Consultant who is still working in the industry.   Examples given occurred in Recruitment Agencies in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

    ––––––––

    Introducing Eliza Northcote

I’m a writer who says what I think, regardless of how many feathers I ruffle.   I promise all these anecdotes are true so you will know what watch out for if you are dealing with recruiters.   I have provided some job search tips at the end of this book to help you through the painful process if you’re job searching right now.  It can be hard and very time consuming, I understand and empathise completely.

    ––––––––

Please note, there are British, Australian and New Zealand colloquialisms throughout the book so if you think ‘WTF?’ perhaps Google the phrase or just assume it’s one of these! Am I English, am I Aussie? What about a New Zealander? I’m not telling, sorry about that.   There are so many recruiters in all these countries that jump around the Commonwealth in search of their next big break, so good luck trying to find me - the needle of truth in this geographical haystack!

    Chapter 1 – Sales Industries

    ––––––––

Sales Industries and Salespeople That Bug Us

Recruiters are right up there in despised occupations along with car salespeople and real estate agents.   Is the negative perception of these industries fair? Well yes, in a way.    In all sectors there are bad seeds that give the honest workers a poor overall reputation.   There are dodgy methods, corners cut, lies told by all salespeople.   See you’ve got to understand their motivations - they’re driven by commission.   They can’t always rely on a regular income like a lot of people, they must chase the pound/dollar to feed their kids or buy a car or pay for those party drugs.

    ––––––––

Visualise the worst salesperson that you’ve ever encountered.   What stood out to you, their dress? Manner? Old fashioned sales techniques such as using your name in every single sentence? Being caught in a lie? Brushing you off when you’ve lost your ‘value’? Did you even like them?

    ––––––––

Now picture the best salesperson that you’ve encountered; someone that you didn’t even realise had sold you a service or product at the time.   What stood out about them, did you trust them? Do they have a good reputation in the market? Were they open and honest with you? Did you actually like them?

    ––––––––

Sales trainees can learn strategies and techniques until they’re blue in the face, but if you haven’t got the people skills and don’t come across as genuine then you’ll never succeed in this competitive sector.   The best salesmen and saleswomen that I’ve met are non-assuming types who you’d quite like to gain as a trusted friend.

Recruitment’s Cronies in the ‘Bottom of the Heap’

    Real Estate Agents:

I attended an online marketing training session with several young real estate people who were obliged to attend to keep their L&D (Learning and Development) quota up.   So, needless to say, they weren’t engaged in the training.   Three girls reminded me of air hostesses with their impeccable presentation, fancy suits, thick makeup and attractiveness.   They were friendly but bored, happily chatting to me but I could guarantee at the end of the day they wouldn’t be able to remember anything we talked about.    One guy was in a very stylish suit sporting an expensive watch with the latest iPhone that he scrolled through relentlessly.   Afterwards in the car park they all drove past me in dented, old cars so I’ve made a point to notice real estate agents’ vehicles now and sure enough, it’s quite common.   It was all about the face to face presentation so I’m guessing Real Estate commission doesn’t stretch beyond Savile Row suits for most of them!

    ––––––––

    Car Sales Professionals:

Let me lead you on what I call the ‘car yard dance’ where you arrive to a car sales premises and start looking around.
