    Chapter 1

I hate Christmas I exclaimed with annoyance.

Anna stop being melodramatic you don’t hate Christmas no one hates Christmas my friend Holly sarcastically replied.

I turned to raise my eyebrows at her as if to contradict what she said. I had only finalised my divorce from my husband (of only 6 months) last week and was being practically forced to go to parties to ‘get me out of the house.’ Personally, these parties were torture.

Don’t look at me like that Anna I’ve told you before you are going to the parties. There are only three of them Holly smiled tentively at me.

THREE! I didn’t agree to three or did I agree? I cannot remember and to be honest I didn’t care. I had turned into a sceptic of Christmas and everything that Christmas meant. I had been forced into putting up my Christmas tree and the wrapping of presents will be left for Christmas eve when I am drunk in my apartment and alone.

You never know you might meet someone at these parties Holly tentively mumbled.

Deep down even Holly knew that was unlikely. These parties were for couples not for single people especially someone who had just been divorced.

Holly passed me a stack of Christmas cards, a pen and what you could only describe as a tatty Santa Claus stamp which sealed the cards.

Since Holly got married to the love of her life Luke, she was unbearable always saying love quotes and giving me these little speeches on how everyone’s soul mates were out there. She was harmless but rather annoying.

I may have to stamp Santa on her forehead to make a point.

Why are you giving me these? I held up the stack of sickly Christmas cards that were in my hand.

To send to your loved. I mean your important people. Oh, for Christ sake Anna there only cards stop looking at me like I am torturing you! Holly answered blushing a little.

    I don’t need twenty. I need five I mumbled a little depressed.

Holly didn’t answer to my comment, she simply cocked her head at me as in to say, ‘stop being so depressed.’

She got up walked over to my fridge and took out the bottle of whisky I had. Taking out two shot glasses she filled them both up and handed me one.

You know I love you, but you need to get a life or get laid. Drink this. It may help Holly bluntly said while passing me a shot of whisky.

I couldn’t disagree with her. The one thing I really really wanted was to have sex. I needed a no strings attached kind of fuck that blew your mind. I tossed the whisky back and filled us both another shot.

Cheers babe I whispered smiling at Holly who smiled brightly back at me.

Do you want a red glitter pen? Holly asked excitedly.

Holly are you trying to kill me? I sarcastically answered while raising my eyebrows at her.

Holly giggled back at me then passed me a black glitter pen. She knew me so well.

    ****************************

Mum can we turn off the Christmas music I cannot listen to it on loop I shouted to my mum over the booming tunes you heard wherever you went at Christmas time.

Stop being such a Scrooge Mum shouted back at me.

She was hanging from the top of the enormous Christmas tree she had bought in the Boxing Day sale last year.

Mum never usually was a Christmas decoration kind of women and I had this hunch that this year she was going over the top for my sake.

Even our poor Yorkshire terrier Rocky was looking up at the Christmas tree. I wondered if he thought it was ridiculous like I did.

Is this completely necessary? I mumbled more to myself than my mother.

You haven’t seen the window decorations and the icicles for the top of the house. Your father is going to put them up for me. Mum excitedly replied.

Did dad agree, or did you tell him? I asked sarcastically.

Mum laughed at me which answered my question. Poor dad he has his hands filled with mum this year and not to mention the fact grandmother was staying Christmas Eve night.

The poor bloke needs a lifetime supply of headache tablets and about ten bottles of sherry to survive this Christmas.

I hear you’re going to three Christmas parties this year isn’t that exciting? Mum shouted down from somewhere at the top of the tree.

Part of being self-employed means you don’t have to go to Christmas parties I mumbled with a hint of annoyance.

Sweetheart you might meet someone and it’s good to talk to humans rather than computers Mum pointed out.

At least computers don’t annoy me. Plus, I am an accountant we need computers I thought that was obvious. I suppose some people just don’t understand I rudely said.

Mum climbed down the ladder to walk over to me and give me a big hug.

Anna your mother loves you but you seriously need to what do they say nowadays you need to get a life Mum tried to reason with me.

I laughed at her attempt to be ‘down with the kids’ which made her smile and laugh.

I have something for you to decorate your home with. I know you had a tree and lights but wait until you see what I got you Mum excitedly said while she ran up the stairs.

I felt paws on my legs and picked up Rocky in my arms. He gave me a quick kiss on my neck and nibbled my ears. One of the people I truly missed when I left home was Rocky. He was always so reliable.

What did mum buy me Rocky? Promise to protect me from Mrs happy go lucky psycho I cradled Rocky like a baby in my arms.

How exciting is this Mum breathlessly said after running down the stairs too quickly.

If only she tripped I thought which made me chuckle to myself.

Mum opened the box pulling out a small sculpture of a village in the centre was an ice skating rink. It was very beautiful covered in snow and the ice rink was made from clear glitter. Mum clearly had put a lot of thought into the decoration when she picked it for me.

Thank you Mum I replied a little tearfully.

She grabbed me so tight that Rocky yelped in between us.

Merry Christmas my darling Mum whispered kissing my forehead.

Oh for god sakes Merry Christmas mum I quietly replied.

    Chapter 2

Late to my first Christmas party of a season which I didn’t even want to go to.

It took longer than I thought choosing my outfit which ended up being a burgundy long sleeve dress and a pair of simple black glitter stilettos teamed with a leather jacket.

My apartment phone rang when I was attempting to quickly apply mascara to my eyes.

Anna I am waiting down here. Holly will do her nut, she told us not to be late Luke, Holly’s Husband, shouted down at me.

I’m coming wait for ten seconds I have to grab my clutch I answered.

Luke sighed down the end of the phone before I put it down. Some people and their damn schedules!

Running quickly down the stairs which I instantly regretted, taking the elevator would have been much easier especially in heels. Luke was sat tapping his steering wheel of his over the top car in frustration.

Sorry I’m late I said apologetically at him while giving him my best smile.

I looked at the back seat for Holly but she wasn’t there.

We had an argument therefore she went to help Caroline set up Luke muttered to my unanswered question.

Did you not put it in the right place again? I sarcastically mumbled chuckling to myself at what I had walked into a few weeks before.

Luke playfully punched me in the shoulder and shook his head at me. I poked my tongue back at him, scrunching my face like a teenager.

Ready to get tortured Luke evilly replied to me which automatically shut me up.

    He poked his tongue back
