E sme is such a stick in the mud, Kennedy said, sulking. She doesn’t like to have any fun, even for her birthday.

Kennedy had always been the outgoing one among her peer group. She was the one who liked to try new things, to go new places, and to meet new people. And within her group of friends there was the power dynamic between Kennedy and Esme. Kennedy always wanted to go out and try new things. Esme wanted to stay in and stick to quiet activities.

It had been Kennedy who suggested the friends should go out for Esme’s birthday, to maybe go to a club or at least a bar. What was the fun in being old enough to drink, but never using the opportunity? It was frustrating.

Sadly, as much as Kennedy tried to pull the group, which consisted of both Kennedy, Esme, Ariana, and Tara, toward fun activities, it always seemed as if Esme won out. Rather than a night spent out on the town, they were more likely to spend a night in, either watching movies or playing board games. Those could be lots of fun, but Kennedy wanted more than constant nights in. She wanted to go out and meet new people, especially men.

Esme had shot down the idea of going out. She wanted to spend her birthday with her best friends at home. And it was hard to argue with the wishes of the birthday girl. She knew what she wanted and she was going to get it.
