Sadie desperately wants to rescue her friend Narissa from the clutches of the humans who kidnapped her. Before she can find a way to their hidden lab, humans capture Sadie for their evil experiments. Elijah, Luke, and Greyson -- her mates -- will stop at nothing to get her back. As the wolves search for a way to keep themselves and their packs safe, something even darker lurks in the shadows.
They don’t have one enemy, but two who are out to destroy all the shifters, be they human or Fairy. Will her mates rescue her in time? Can they overcome the threat and save not only themselves, but also set all shifters free from fear?
Chapter One
Sadie snagged Luke’s shirt and pulled it on. The top clung to her curves but hung to her knees. The aroma of his wolf lingered on the fabric. She took a large inhalation, and the fleeting image of the first time she caught his scent warmed her insides. Sadie recalled opening her eyes after she awoke from her turning fever. The musky fragrance coming off him had intoxicated her, and her wolf knew Luke was her mate. At the time, Sadie didn’t understand what it truly meant to have a mate. Shapeshifters were still a new thing for her. The fear of them had lingered in her bones until she accepted she wanted to be one. All because she fell in love with billionaire Elijah Dane.
She hovered in the doorway and glanced back at the mishmash of limbs as her three mates slept on the king bed. Luke’s feet hung off the mattress and he snorted. She chuckled at the sound and let her gaze rove over the two other men. Greyson snuggled against Elijah filling in the hole she once occupied. Her heart hitched at the thought of Greyson. After being gone from her life for so long, he had returned.
Her stomach growled again. She snapped herself away from the memories threatening to pull her under. Sadie walked to the kitchen, opened the fridge and took out a few slices of cold bacon. She savored the greasy taste of the meat and the quiet in the house. The energy of her wolf mates lingered along the outside of her mind as they slept, wrapped in dreams. If she extended her awareness outside the cabin, Luke’s pack and other shifters -- who had come at her behest -- made an uncomfortable rake along her aura. All of them struggled to find a safe place where they could mourn their losses while others plotted their revenge. All of them were victims of those who were hurting the packs and clans of shifters with silver.
Her appetite turned at the thought of all the carnage. She was supposed to be some super wolf to save all the shifters. Sadie didn’t understand why she was chosen. She certainly didn’t fit the role of a superhero. She tried to relax, but her mind spun imagining what the next step might be. She stared out the kitchen window and searched for solace in the woods. A white shimmer rushed past the window. She jumped back. Someone rapped quietly on the backdoor. This is the part in the horror movies where the serial killer bursts in and slaughters everyone in the cabin.
Her wolf shifted within her mind. It’s not a serial killer. Open the door.
You sure?
The beast didn’t answer, but she could internally feel the creature roll its eyes.
Sadie pulled the door open. A creature stood outside waiting to come in. She appeared nearly human. Small white horns hugged the sides of her head right above her ears. Black hair hung like a curtain of ink down her back. Intense blue eyes examined Sadie. A long purple gown covered her female form. The creature outside was a Fairy. A female she hadn’t seen in the group before when they arrived earlier.
May I enter your home so we can speak?
she asked softly.
Who are you and what do you want to talk about?
The Fairy let out a breath through her nose and black flame curled around her nostrils. Sadie felt a moment of fear but held her ground. My name is Narin. I’m Narissa’s sister. I have information about who took her. Please, she’s in so much pain. You’re the only one who can help her.
At the mention of Narissa, Sadie’s heart dropped. Her best friend had been taken by the same people who were after the other shifters. Her friend’s agony had come to Sadie in a dream. It was the driving force she needed to call together all the shifters and those Fairies who had pledged themselves to help the silver wolf.
How do you know about her being kidnapped?
Sadie asked, keeping the Fairy outside the house. It could be a ruse. Everything in her jumped at the tidbit of news. However, she couldn’t believe her without proof. How do I even know you’re Nari’s sister? She was shunned in Fairy because she’s a shapeshifter.
You have every right to be wary of me. I love my sister even though our father decreed her not worthy of the royal line because of her tainted blood. The other Fae who came here, the shifters, hate my father as much as I do. Many of his subjects do not approve of his actions and working with the humans. Please let me enter and I’ll tell you what I know.
Swear to me no harm will come to anyone in this house or the other shifters in this compound. Prove to me you’re Nari’s sister, and I’ll let you in.
Sadie knew from her friend to get a Fairy’s word before agreeing to anything. Then they had to honor it.
Narin glanced around the outside and stared into the woods where the Fairy shifters had taken refuge. I swear I’m not here to hurt you and I mean no harm to the others. I swear it on my sister’s mark upon you. I’m here in peace.
The Fairy drew out a silver locket from under her dress and opened it. Inside was a picture of Narissa and Narin. This was our mother’s. Narissa is my twin.
Sadie held the locket and studied the images. The paintings shared a resemblance to one another. The sisters weren’t identical. The silver was cool against her palm and didn’t burn her like it would have any other shifter because of her immunity to it. What do you think? Can we trust her?
Sadie asked her wolf.
She seems distraught, and she swore not to harm anyone. I say we let her in. I’m as worried about Nari as you are.
Come in, but please be quiet. I don’t want my mates waking up.
The Fairy slipped inside. The door closed on its own and locked. No sound came from it. I put a sound dampening spell over the room so they won’t hear us.
Great. You said you had some information about who took Narissa.
Yes. She and I have always had a telepathic link because we’re twins. Sometimes we can communicate between this world and Fairy. We’ve had the ability since we were kids and hid it from our father. He wouldn’t understand. It’s how I knew to come to you. She sent me.
Sadie rubbed her arms at the sudden cold encompassing her body. Then she realized it wasn’t a draft. Thin lines of frost spread outward from where Narin stood along the tile floor. Faint ice crystals formed around the Fairy’s body and floated to the ground like snow. Can you turn off the ice? I might be warm-blooded, but I can’t deal with the cold you’re putting out.
Sorry,
Narin let out a breath. I lose control when I’m stressed.
