    Chapter One

    The evening breeze brought the scent of blackberry blossoms and mown hay to Deirdre. She sat on the porch with a kettle in her lap, the pan’s bottom covered in a thick layer of broken verdant bodies. Green bean strings and ends dropped unheeded to the porch planks instead of into the paper bag by her chair.

    The portable phone rang. She retrieved it from its place between her chair and her hip. She didn’t need to look at the Caller ID to know who it was.

    Didn’t I tell you he was with her again? His bass voice sent a thrill through her.

    Yes, she replied, her heart heavy. You did.

    Do it tonight, Deirdre.

    I can’t. She shook her head. I just can’t. I married him, and he should have a chance to change his ways.

    You’re only torturing yourself. He doesn’t love you. What other proof do you need?

    Everyone deserves a second chance. She blinked away tears.

    A sigh drifted over the phone line. I love you.

    Malachi is my husband. I’ve never seen you.

    You love me. You know you do. I’m the one who listens to you, who cares about your feelings. Is he ever there when you need him?

    The line clicked, and she laid the phone down with a troubled sigh.

    Over the past month, her husband had come home twice around midnight. On five other nights, he arrived during the wee hours of morning. Tonight made the eighth broken promise.
