Valeria dreamed of spiders. Six large black spiders rested on a red-sheened web. Three silver moths struggled on the sticky center. With a twist, one moth escaped and fluttered away. The other two, more deeply cocooned in the web, struggled valiantly but couldn’t follow. The largest spider reared on its hind legs and thrummed the nearest threads. The five smaller spiders did the same until the moths shook with the vibrations.
Valeria woke to a high-pitched hum in her head. The mental family network, her psychic connection to the family buzzed with anger. She’d never felt this much anger. Anger was normal, but not this level of rage. She shivered. The only way to get information was to enter the network more fully. Dread closed her throat. Going into the network brought the whole family’s awareness on her. If they wanted to, they could read her thoughts and witness her failures.
After three deep breaths to clear her mind, she entered the network. Her grandmother’s and aunts’ black presences and Winifred’s dark silver one shone, but Corona’s pale silver was gone. Not weak, not distant, but snuffed out as if it had never been. Even in sleep, the family’s presence stayed in the network. Corona’s absence could only mean one thing: She was dead.
Valeria blinked her eyes, pushed the connection to the back of her mind, and focused instead on her room. It had been their room years ago. Faint moonlight shone from the window highlighting Corona’s old bed, stripped to a bare mattress. The room shimmered with Valeria’s next blink. Maybe she could cast a spell to remove the lost lonely feeling that ached inside her chest. On the floor, the spell circle’s white chalk sparkled in the light, but it gave her no ideas. She closed her eyes and let the tears fall for just a moment. Corona couldn’t be dead. She was so young, a few years younger than Valeria. Corona was gone and it was her fault. If only…
What felt like a thousand tiny hooks embedded in her ribs pulled at her chest. Only Isabella, her grandmother, could use the network to compel a witch to come to her. Why was she being called? She couldn’t control the magic within her, so she wasn’t eligible to become a full witch. Still, the pull dragged her out of bed, with just enough time to grab a robe and slippers. Then it pulled her down the cobbled pathway from the inner-city mansions, to the twisted remains of old town.
Her hastily donned robe fluttered in the cold breeze. A shiver lodged at the back of her neck. Valeria rubbed at it, trying to dispel the feeling of being watched. The feeling deepened, causing her to peer at the passing
