Chapter One

Sadie, is everything okay?

She jumped when she heard Luke, one of her wolf mates. He came into the kitchen wearing nothing more than plaid pajama pants. He slipped his arm around her waist and nuzzled her neck. His beard tickled her skin as he kissed her. It was then he held her closer and growled.

The strange wolf who had entered the house looked up.

Who is that? Luke asked.

I-I’m not sure. I… He looks like Greyson.

The other male stopped eating mid-bite and dashed out of the kitchen onto the patio. Sadie broke loose from Luke’s grasp and ran after him, but the fleeing wolf disappeared into the densely wooded backyard. The full moon shone bright silver as it sank beneath the trees. The night would be over soon. She wanted to go farther into the forest, but Luke caught her hand.

Hey, come back inside and tell me what happened. He’ll come back if he’s hungry enough. Sometimes strays are drawn by the smell of food or the energy of the pack. They might linger for a day, but they normally wander off. If he shows up in the morning, then Elijah can talk to him. Come back to bed.

It’s the other wolf, her other half said. The one you thought you recognized.

The snarling intensified. The wolf rolled through her, and she didn’t stop the transformation. She dropped to all fours and raced outside to see what her two mates were doing. They circled a smaller wolf. The moon highlighted the animal’s reddish fur, but in the pale light she could see where the wolf was badly scarred. His teeth were bared and his hackles were raised. He wasn’t an alpha, but he tried to stand his ground. His ears lay flat against his head. She could see his ribs now and how skinny and scruffy he was. Now she was closer to him, she could smell how enticing he was. Can’t you give me a manual with all this? I can’t handle having another man to deal with.

The stranger snarled. Sadie nipped Luke’s leg, but he didn’t even acknowledge he had felt the bite. Elijah jumped at the new wolf and pushed him into a corner. He glanced at Luke.

Sadie didn’t sense the men, just the animals. They were protecting her. She sighed, not wanting to deal with the pissing contest. Sadie darted between the new wolf and her two mates. She stood her ground. The other two did not want to back down. The wolf in her grew annoyed. Sadie forced her dominance over her two alpha males.

Back off.

He’s in my territory and shouldn’t be here without invitation or announcing himself, Elijah snapped.

He did. You were upstairs asleep. I invited him into the house to talk. Sadie tried to reason with him. He pushed back against her, but she held her ground.

You’re ours. He has no right to stake a claim, Luke snarled.
