    Part 3: Flossed and Found

Out of nowhere there’s a screechin’ siren. It’s comin’ from the Fairy HQ right behind us. Lena looks over her shoulder, then back at me. I’m feelin’ like the kid with chocolate on his face when his ma asks if he’s been at the cake.

Fire alarm? Lena asks in hope. The noise is ear-splittin’.

I lean forward to the driver, tryin’ to remain calm.

Zone 42. As fast as you can.

I’ve only got eyes for the road. The eyes of the taxi driver flick between it and me. We both know. The dots of sweat on my brow might aswell be Braille, and they’d read one word. GUILTY.

A lot of the cars ahead of us have slowed, or pulled onto the kerb. Some drivers are gettin’ out, and looking back to see what the noise is about. When we take a bend, Lena’s view is blocked by the buildings. The siren sound fades away.

    Baby, your hand.

She pats my forearm. I look down and see pricks of blood on my palm. My nails have dug in and scored the soft flesh in moon crescents.

    What’s going on? she says.

I’m a trapped animal in the car. Feelin’
