I have to mention the gorgeous covers as well, which they so kindly donated for each episode, as well as the complete, Going Solo, novel. Chapter Eleven

Jemma awoke to the loud ringing of the motel phone. She had been writing until the early hours of this Monday morning, her creative juices were flowing; some of it had been for her blog, but most had been on the new novel.

H’low, she mumbled, eyes closed, still half asleep.

Jemma, hi, darling. It’s me, Laurie.

Laurie, hi, she stared at the clock beside her bed — almost eleven-thirty!

Did I wake you, you sound half asleep? Her friend and publisher did not sound impressed.

Yes, I was asleep, but only because I was working til the early hours of this morning, she defended herself.

Oh, okay. Laurie was mollified; the more Jemma wrote, the happier she was. So how are you doing, girlfriend? I haven’t received any emails from you since you got back to Vegas. It’s not like you to be so quiet … what’s up?

Jemma sat up, leaning her back against the headboard. I’m fine, just busy, you know...

No, I don’t know, Laurie’s voice had that mother-hen tone to it, and Jemma sighed, she didn’t need this right now.

Is everything okay with the book and the toy company? Jemma asked, changing the subject.

Everything’s fine on this side, Laurie paused. It’s you I’m worried about.

I’m fine, Laurie. She tried her best to keep her tone upbeat. Why shouldn’t I be?

Because I’ve got a feeling in my gut that something’s not right, that’s why.

Jemma swallowed, her throat suddenly tight; keep it together, girl. Laurie, I’m fine. But even to her own ears, she didn’t sound fine. Damn Laurie, the woman is too sharp for her own good!

Jemma, what the fuck’s going on? Laurie’s voice sounded anxious rather than angry, which was Jemma’s undoing.

Laurie, please don’t— She felt the tears burning her eyes, constricting her throat, making it impossible for her to speak.

Jemma! Jemma, are you crying? Goddamn it! Laurie’s voice was shrill with anger, anxiety, whatever. Jemma was too mortified to tell.

Laurie, a sob escaped her. I’m okay, really.

No, you’re not! It’s that goddamn stud isn’t it?

Stud! Did Laurie know? Please, God, don’t let her know! "W-what do you mean stud?"

Oh, come on, Jemma. You know who I’m talking about, that man-whore you couldn’t wait to get back to, she challenged, her angry breathing audible through the phone. Has he dumped you? Did he even bother to pick you up from the airport?

Of course he picked me up!

It was too late to try and cover it up now, Jemma realized. But just how much could she tell her friend?

I’m coming to Vegas, Laurie stated.

    "What?"

You heard me. I’ve got some stuff to do today, but I’ll book myself on tomorrow’s morning flight. Laurie was all business. Can you pick me up from the airport?

What? Jemma repeated, unable to take it all in.

Can you pick me up from the airport tomorrow? Laurie spoke slowly, as if to a child. I will call you and email you the arrival time. Oh, and book me an overnight room in that dump you’re staying at. I have to be back for a meeting on Wednesday.

Laurie, there is no need for you to come to Vegas. Jemma sniffed, searching for a tissue beside the bed. I’m fine, just a little — homesick.

Sure you are — the bastard, she spoke softly, but Jemma heard her. Anyway, there are some papers I need you to sign.

Jemma didn’t believe her. You can email them, scan them, or something and I’ll send them back to you.

They need originals, so I’ll see you tomorrow.

By the time Jemma hung up she wasn’t sure whether to feel excited about her friend’s fleeting visit or worried. She didn’t for a moment believe Laurie was flying all the way to Vegas just to get some documents signed. No, the lady was very shrewd, and very protective, as well, it seemed. Jemma shook her head, smiling for the first time in days, as her mood lifted. It would be good to see her friend and publisher again, in fact
