Prologue

Emma was upset as she entered the house that Monday night. She’d been in her new job for a month now. At first, it was everything she’d dreamed of. But, after four weeks of working for her new boss, she was beginning to regret the decision. Not that he’d done anything wrong, he hadn’t. At least, not yet. It was more about what she’d heard from her new co-workers.

Tom? I honestly don’t know what to do. Mr. Davis has made it clear he wants me along on this next trip out of town. Very clear. I’m pretty sure what that means, too. If the stories are even halfway true. I mean, he seems like a nice guy, except for his attitude about women. Especially when he’s out of town. I can even understand why he’s like that. Sort of, anyway. He’s a very nice-looking man. And, he’s got one hell of an ego. I guess he’d have to have to accomplish what he has with his life. But, I’ve heard stories since I’ve been there… Too many stories, about what he’s like away from the office. What he expects from his ‘Assistant.’ Maybe, I should say what he demands from his ‘Assistant.’ I love my new job, but I don’t want to have to do that to keep it. It’s just not right, declared Emma.

No, I agree, it’s not right, Em. But, sometimes things are just the way they are, you know? He owns the company. From what you’ve told me, he doesn’t much care about his reputation, or anything else. He’s a force to be reckoned with. It’s not like he reports to shareholders or anything. You don’t even have a Human Resources department, do you? asked her husband.

No, there’s nothing like that, he’s the heap big honcho, there’s nobody else. It’s all him. So, you’re right, he just doesn’t care one way or the other. I’m sorry, but I think the only recourse might be to resign. I really hate to lose the money, and it won’t look very good on my resume, but I just don’t see any other option. When I was offered this last promotion, I was unbelievably excited. But, I had no idea what I was getting in to. It wasn’t until I got to the main office that I started to hear the stories. Ever since, I’ve been afraid this might happen, replied Emma frustratedly. Shit, shit, shit! I really hate to lose this job.

Em? Since you really do seem to like your job, what if I said there might be another option? asked Tom, hesitantly. His voice so quiet, Emma almost didn’t hear him.

Chapter 1

You want me to what? cried Emma, shock registering in her voice. Are you out of your freaking mind? I don’t think you understand what I’ve been saying at all, Tom. Have you even been listening to me? He expects me to sleep with him on this trip. To fuck him, Tom! And, from what I’ve heard, he expects his ‘Assistant’ to take care of some of the clients, too.

The room seemed deadly quiet after Emma’s outburst. Only the quiet ticking of the wall clock broke the silence. Its sound almost like the deadly ticking of a bomb. Tom looked away, staring steadfastly at the far wall, a red flush creeping over his face. He seemed too ashamed to even look his wife in the eye. Taking a deep breath, he finally broke the silence. I’ve been listening, I promise you, I have. I’m serious, Em. Honest. I can’t explain it, not really. It doesn’t mean that I don’t love you. Please don’t think that, ever. It’s just something that I’ve… Well… I guess, something I’ve been ‘fantasizing’ about. At least, ever since you got this new position where you’re required to travel. I think it’d be hot.
