After twelve years, there was no denying that Rob and Julie’s marriage needed help. One of Julie’s friends recommended a marriage counselor that she had used, and they set up the first meeting. The counselor listened as they described their issues, occasionally asking questions. At the end of the meeting, she recommended that each of them come to her individually once, then they would meet together again.

In his meeting, Rob explained that when they were first married, sex was spontaneous and frequent, and that Julie seemed to have cooled to him over time. If there’s any difficulty remembering, I know there’s problems. But when I asked you two those questions, I could see the joy in your face as you remembered. That’s a very good sign. The problems you describe are not uncommon at all. Women are just wired differently than men. When it comes to sex, men are like microwaves ovens, and women are like crock pots. The issues that you each pointed out in your individual sessions are listed on this pad of paper. Now, the question is, how do you two address those issues?

Pam handed them the pad, then just sat back and listened as the two brainstormed ways that they could resolve their differences. At the end of the meeting, they had a game plan. They agreed to spend more time dating, so that Julie wouldn’t feel that it was always just about sex. They had once enjoyed going to the movies, but hadn’t been in a while. So they would intentionally have at least one date night every week. Also, they agreed that when they had sex, Robert would be more intentional about foreplay, and that Julie would make an effort to climax, even if Robert finished before her. They felt that would help her become more motivated to have sex more often.
