Chapter One

The Breath Of Life

I’D MANAGED TO hold back my tears the entire drive over. But not anymore.

I burst in through Laura’s front door, sobbing my eyes out, not even trying to pretend at this point. Laura was standing in front of a mirror in the hallway, putting on earrings. She turned to see me standing there weeping in the door to her apartment. I noticed she wore a form-fitting red dress, showing off an ample amount of boobage. Clearly, she was getting ready for a big date, and I’d just come and interrupted her.

Nevertheless, Laura being Laura, she didn’t accuse me as such. Instead, she hurried over, looking concerned, her arms outstretched to embrace me like a mother.

Elaine! Oh my gosh, Elaine, what’s the matter?!

She pulled me into her cleavage, nestling me close. It was nice, like a mother hen keeping her chicks close to protect them.

It’s Anthony! I said in a voice that cracked with the syllables. "He’s going away on business... Again!"

Ohhhhhh, Laura said knowingly, pulling me even closer to her. I felt her heart beating steadily up against me, and noticed how violently my own heart was drumming away by contrast. She ran her fingers through my hair, and kissed me on the crown of my head.

I know he’s cheating on me! I said. I know whenever he goes on his stupid little trips he always sleeps around, and acts like I don’t even exist!

Elaine, come on! Anthony may have his faults, but how could he possibly do that to you? You two have been together since- well, since forever!

I shook my head, and the tears continued to stream in perverse abundance down the front of her dress.

Since junior high school, I said, feeling ridiculous even acknowledging this fact. "And that’s why I’m so sure! I’ve seen the signs, over and over again by now. The text messages he gets in the middle of the night, and he always turns away or goes in the other room to see them. He always says it’s work, but why is he so secretive about them? Sometimes I smell women’s perfume on him, or he says he has to stay and work late, and when I try to call his office his secretary says he left at his normal time... I’m serious, Laura!
