Y our momma makes me sick, Zell yelled to Boz.

What did she say? Boz asked.

She said she’s on her way home and we best beat her getting there or else.

Boz didn’t say a world. She just started putting her shoes on. Go change and hurry up, she told Zell.

We still have to get Momma’s car, Zell reminded her.

Not tonight. You just said we had to beat her home, Boz explained.

I know, but what about her car?

Zell, you know Momma can act a fool. We’ll just tell her the car broke down and that we were going back tomorrow to get it.

Zell and Boz had forgotten Jersey was even in the room until he spoke. I can pick it up for y’all and drop it at y’alls house.

No, Zell and Boz said in unison.

Damn, Jersey replied. "Y’all act like the kids in Mommy Dearest. No. More. Wire. Hangers." Jersey tried to make a joke to lower their stress level. It didn’t help.

They both just looked at him. He had no clue how ignorant Selena was about to act.

Y’all didn’t see that movie? he asked.

No, we didn’t, Zell snapped, and even if we had, we still wouldn’t be laughing.

Don’t take your frustrations out on him, Boz stated as she turned to Jersey.

Whatever, Zell responded as she walked to the room.

We can let Momma take us to the car in the morning. That way she can see the party really was at the Loft. And we went to it.

After Zell changed back into her clothes, she walked back into the room asking, Are y’all ready?

    Been ready, Boz sounded agitated.

Don’t get salty with me, this ain’t my fault.

How do you figure none of this is your fault? We wouldn’t be in this situation if you hadn’t begged me to ask Momma to let us go to Damon’s party, Boz added. I would have much rather been at home.

You could have said no. It ain’t like I put a gun to your head and made you ask.

    You know what Zell… whatever.

Everybody can’t be a goodie two shoes like you Boz.

Y’all really don’t have time for this right now, Jersey interrupted. If I were y’all, I would be trying to get my story straight.

When both Boz and Zell rolled their eyes at him, he held up his hands. Just saying.

They left out of Jersey’s front door and hopped into his car. Zell had gone straight to the backseat, leaving the front seat open for Boz to sit next to Jersey.

    What’s your address? Jersey asked.

4519 Sycamore Street, Boz rattled off their address, not remembering it was Sycamore where the 360 app had shown Damon stopped earlier.

Jersey remembered. As soon as Boz gave him her address, Jersey got a bad feeling about it. He gave Siri the address and listened as she directed him on which way to go. Jersey wasn’t sure if he should drive fast so Boz and Zell could beat their mother home like she said, or if he should drive slowly so they could miss Damon all together.

Jersey chose to just drive the speed limit and hoped he could still get them home in time and miss Damon. He’d rather take the chance of being late and missing Damon’s crazy ass.

Boz turned around and looked at Zell in the back seat. Unbelievable. We are about to get the worst beating we have ever gotten in our lives and she sleeps like she doesn’t have a care in the world.

    4519 Sycamore Street

When Damon pulled up to the house Zell shared with her mother and sister, he looked around at the other cars parked up and down the street. He saw the car he was looking for. When he made eye contact, he opened his door and stepped out. She did the same.

Kiwi walked right up to Damon, pressed her body up against his and kissed him long and hard.

Hey baby, she spoke when the kiss ended. I missed you.

    Yeah? Damon asked.

You know I did, Kiwi answered.

What about my boy? You miss him too?

Fuck Jersey, Kiwi hissed. He fucking with some black ass bitch now anyway.

Damon already knew she was talking about Boz. How you figure that?

I caught his ass entertaining the bitch and her sister when I went by his place earlier looking for you.

    Really? Damon instigated.

Them bitches was trying to get crunk with me. If Jersey wasn’t with them I would have fucked them up.

    Damon laughed. Well guess what?

    What?

This where them bitches lay they head. Damon pointed at Zell’s house. Did you bring what I asked you to bring?

Yeah. I got two gas cans and filled them up at the gas station and came straight here.

Good, Damon told her. You got a lighter too?

She pulled the lighter out of her pocket and handed it to Damon.

We ‘bout to burn this shit to the ground, Damon told her.

Them bitches was talking shit to me, Kiwi said. What they do to you?

    Does it matter? Damon barked.

Of course not baby. I was just wondering. That’s all.

Damon pulled his phone out and scrolled to the screen shot of the picture Zell had posted. He held the phone up so Kiwi could see it. This is what the fuck she did.

Kiwi wanted to ask more questions but could sense Damon was getting agitated by her questions.

Come on, he told her as they walked over to her car. Damon handed one of the gas cans to Kiwi.

He grabbed the other one. They walked back over to 4519. Kiwi followed behind Damon asking no questions. They went to the backyard.

You start on the left side and I’ll start on the right. Meet me back at the front. They walked around the house dousing the exterior with gasoline. When Damon heard the front door to the house open and close, he emptied his can, took the lighter out and set the blaze. Because the house was made of wood, it didn’t take long for the fire to catch on and spread.

Damon ran back to the front of the house. He hopped in his car and sped away, never once looking back to see if Kiwi had made it to her car and pulled off.

When Jersey turned onto Sycamore Street, he didn’t have to think twice that whatever had happened involved Damon.

    What’s all this? Boz asked.

    Flashing lights were everywhere.

    Zell wake up, Boz called.

Zell sat up. What the hell?

Eventually they had to pull over and park the car. The road was blocked by police cars and fire trucks.

Jersey, Boz, and Zell got out and started walking towards a crowd that had gathered behind police tape. As they walked closer, Boz and Zell realized their house was on fire. They could see water being sprayed from the top of the fire truck directly at their house.

Oh my God, Zell cried. Boz, where’s Momma?

    Twenty Minutes Earlier

Selena had talked Jason’s ear off the entire ride from his place to hers. As much as she talked, he probably didn’t think she was paying attention to how slow he was driving. Selena knew exactly what Jason was trying to do. He was driving slower than normal to give her girls a chance to make it to the house before her. It was cute, she thought. But it didn’t matter.

Little does he know, they were going to catch it no matter if they beat me to the house or not. I just had to say what I said to light a fire up under them. Selena knew if she didn’t lay down stipulations, Zell would have taken her sweet time coming home. Her thinking would be at least I came home.

Not tonight. It ain’t hardly enough.

    Are you ok? Jason asked.

Selena had stopped talking for a couple seconds, pondering over her girls and the disrespect they’d shown by outright lying to her.

I’m not letting them go out for the rest of the year, Selena stated. Hell, maybe even two years.

Jason almost laughed out loud. He thought she was joking. When he looked over and her face still had that angry scowl stretched across it, he was glad he hadn’t laughed.

That may be a bit too long, Jason told her. Raising teenagers was nothing new to him.

He could write a book on what to do and what not to do while trying to raise teenagers into responsible adults.

Selena looked over at Jason, giving him the evil eye. He may very well know what he was talking about, but Selena wasn’t in the best frame of mind right now to hear it.

It may not be long enough. They know damned well what I expect and they deliberately disobeyed me.

When Jason didn’t respond, Selena continued. Ok, let’s say your teenage daughter lied to you, didn’t go where she said she was going, got stopped in a car with a drug dealer who had drugs in the car, what would you do?

    I’d be pissed.

    Check.

    I’d probably talk to her.

    Check.

    And I’d probably ground her.

    Check.

But not for the rest of the year, Jason added.

And that’s where we differ, Selena told him.

It’s hard being a teenager today.

    It was hard yesterday too.

Selena wasn’t budging. Zell and Boz had fucked up big time and she wasn’t going to have it. Selena thought about how her life would have been had she never met Theo. Her relationship with her mom may have been different.

I probably would have finished college. I might even be a registered nurse. But I wouldn’t have my girls. Over my dead body am I going to let Zell or Boz travel down the road I travelled. And if that means keeping their asses in the house to keep them away from thugs, then so be it.

Selena was talking so much and had so many thoughts running through her mind it seemed as though the ride flew by. Jason was turning on her street. He pulled the car to a stop in front of her house. Selena was pissed when she looked at the driveway. Her car wasn’t in it like she’d expected. Zell and Boz hadn’t beat her home like she told them.

Thanks for driving me home. I appreciate it, Selena said.

You’re welcome. Do I need to stay and referee to make sure things don’t get too out of hand?

Oh, honey ain’t no need for refereeing. It’s about to be a one-woman show.

Jason gave up on trying to get her to go easy on Zell and Boz. He decided not to push it. Selena knew her girls best.

Are you sure you don’t want to go get your truck tonight?

I’m sure. This situation needs to be handled now rather than later.

    Ok, Jason said.

Selena opened the door and stepped out the car. Jason did the same. They walked to the front door hand in hand.

I hope you had a good time tonight, considering, Jason stated.

I did. I just hate it was ruined by my kids.

Selena stuck her key into the lock. As soon as she turned the knob and opened the door, she and Jason both smelled a strong gas odor.

What the hell is that smelling like gas? Selena asked.

They stepped further into the house and closed the front door.

Do you have a gas stove? Jason asked.

No. It’s electric. But that doesn’t smell like gas from a stove.

    Where’s your water heater?

It’s down the hall on the right, the middle door.

Jason walked down the hall and opened the door to the water heater. He was checking to see if the smell was stronger in there. It wasn’t.

Oh my God, Jason heard Selena say.

What is it? he asked as he walked
