CHAPTER 1
Darrel Payton promised to pick up a broke down pick-up truck with-in the hour. Behind schedule and doing his best to keep his promise. He arrived only to find the truck buried to the axles.
Richard, I should have known! How many times have I pulled you out in the last year? A dozen or so at least.
Darrel that’s why I had my girlfriend call you, if I called, you might have not come. We had to walk four miles just to get a good cellphone signal.
It’s Friday, you always ruin my weekends.
It’s not like you have a girl to tend to, all you ever do is work.
Richard to top it off, I hear a gator belching, you got stuck right next to a mama gator nesting her young, how sweet. This is going to cost you double.
Darrel pulled his truck into position where he’d use the winch to pull him out. Richard pulled off into the swamp where is 4-wheel drive only dug him digger in to the swamp.
Richard grab that eight-foot 2x4 out of the back of your truck and keep that gator off me, she already jumped at me once.
Two hours later after a lot of digging and repositioning the truck, the winch finally pulled the truck out.
Two hundred should cover it.
That’s most of my paycheck.
Next time stop trying to impress your girlfriend and use common sense, you don’t have a swamp buggy, just a truck.
Turner river off the Tamiami trail in Florida had an infestation of alligators, about two for every ten feet of the river.
In 1999 he inherited his father’s garage when he passed away. He worked there all his life from the time he could walk. his mother died in 1997 and it was just him and his farther. They had three other guys working in the garage. His dad named the place after him. Darrel’s garage and autobody shop.
They made a decent living and they had a nice house in golden Gate Florida which is a part of Naples, Florida. They originally bought a five-acre plot of land, after the shop started making pretty good money, they bought another two-five-acre plots of land to give them fifteen acres for their homestead.
Four-bedroom house and he lived there by himself.
At thirty years old he wish he had a girlfriend to share the house with, but work kept him busy and helped to cure his loneliness he felt sometimes. He had two black mouth curs that occupied his time back at the house.
If the shop had slow times, he send one or two people to his house to run the brush hog and mower to trim back the over-grown grass and trim the tree’s. He prided himself on paying his men on a 40-hour week minimum, even if work slowed down which did not happen often.
Dell His office manager/accountant and all-around boss of the place, treated him like she was his mother. A good lady at fifty years old she ran the shop and the finances perfectly. Relieved a lot of headache from his shoulders. She was smart, strong willed and the guys listened to her better than to himself. When she was not happy everyone stayed clear. He knew if she had not run the office, he’d have folded years ago.
She ran the advertising, set pricing and everything. He just had to make sure the work that came into the shop left and the work performed in a professional manner, quality over quantity. The tow truck, any of the three men could drive, he just liked going on the road, he liked the challenges, never knowing what he’d find until he pulled the tow truck up to the site.
After closing the shop up at around seven, he gave everyone an extra 200.00 in bonus’s for their weekly checks to include Dell. They completed four massive body work repairs over the week and he rewarded his workers accordingly.
Everyone liked working there, they knew that hard work had nice rewards, they knew if the times had slowed down no bonus’s. No one complained. He paid overtime for over forty hours. Normal work day 8-5:00 PM, Monday-Friday with a one-hour lunch break and two fifteen-minute breaks during the day.
He ran to the store on the way home to pick up some dog food and the dogs greeted him when he got home, almost knocking him down. He fed the dogs, and played ball for a half hour and headed inside to take a shower and cook up some dinner. He turned the TV on for noise, did not watch it. Set back and relaxed. Woke up the next day to a loud racket in the yard. The dogs had decided to play with a large diamond back rattle snake, they pissed the snake off and when he tried to move it with a stick the snake bit his hand. The dogs than attacked and killed it. Now he had to mess with a snake bite. Saturday morning and his weekend was shot. He called Dell; she’d told him to hang on she’s on her way.
He loaded up into Dells car and she brought him to the Hospital where they treated him with anti-venom. His hand would swell up like someone beat him with a baseball bat, a few days of pain and he’d get over it. They watched him for a few hours and he told them he’s heading home. They said he needed to have the doctor monitor him. He said it’s not his first-time getting bit and to please check him out or he’s walking out. He called Dell who
