Amy MacKenzie paid the taxi driver and stepped out into the hot Texas sun at the Byington Air Field. The middle-aged cabbie took her two large rolling suitcases out of the trunk and yanked their handles into place so that they would be easy to haul into the tiny terminal.

If he thought she was going to drag the luggage out to the plane herself, he was sadly mistaken. Amy’s look sent him that message loud and clear. He shrugged and took one handle in each of his large hands and pulled the suitcases toward the small building that was nothing like the international airports Amy was used to.

He smiled at her and then looking out the large side window at a man walking toward the building, said, Here comes your pilot now.

Amy watched the tall trim man in casual attire stride toward the terminal. She had expected a pilot who looked like a pilot in a dapper uniform. There was a door in the far corner of the building that opened into the space behind the counter. The man at the counter said, Hey boss, your passenger is here.

The pilot nodded at Amy and his dark-lashed blue eyes took her in with one swift glance. And then he dismissed her. Amy was used to being given more attention than this but in this tank town with its toy airfield, louts like the handsome pilot were probably used to being the adored center of attention.
